Maura A. Hennigan, the longest-serving city councilor, prepares for an unlikely race against a popular mayor

"The personal stakes are high for Hennigan. Politics has consumed her adult life, to the exclusion of almost all else. After three failed tries to advance beyond the City Council, a roll of the dice against Menino is an all-or-nothing proposition. An upset would be the capstone for her long career. A defeat would probably end it.

"In her 12th two-year term, she is the longest-serving member of the City Council, the statutorily weak legislative branch of Boston's strong-mayor form of government. Over four generations and a century, Hennigans have held public office in Boston. Her father, James W. Jr., now 77, was a state representative, state senator, School Committee member, and Suffolk register of probate. Her grandfather, James Sr., preceded him in the Legislature. A great-granduncle served on the Boston Common Council before it was abolished in 1909.

"First elected in 1981, Hennigan was one of four fresh faces to join the last nine-member council, all of whose members were elected citywide. Two years later, she dropped back to win one of the nine new district council seats, which she gave up in 2001 in a risky but successful bid for one of four at-large, citywide seats. The Jamaica Plain resident said that it was a calculated first step toward raising her profile for an up-or-out mayoral run this year.

"Her marriage to Stephen J. Casey ended in 1993 after five years when she filed for divorce. She usually attends events alone around the city.

"I don't have any relationships at all," Hennigan said. "This is my life. This is what I do."

She was married to Casey until 1993. Should this be mentioned in the article? It seems that at the very least when the article reports on her election contests before 1993 it should report the actual name that she was using then.
