Move[edit]

Uh, Google search of Marja Afghanistan gets 196,000 hits, while Marjah Afghanistan gets 26,700. I don't really see the logic for the move. Joshdboz (talk) 04:55, 4 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hah, Google apparently likes to play games. Today the first search has dropped to 124,000 hits and the second jumped near tenfold to 225,000. For reference, NYT and WaPo, apparently use Marja, while WSJ and Times (UK) use Marjah. Any suggestions? Joshdboz (talk) 11:14, 13 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I think it makes absolutely no sense comparing statistical data from Google. Better one should make a correct transcription from the native name مارجهaccording to the conventions for names in Wikipedia. JasN (talk) 21:23, 16 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Does Marja exist or doesn't it?[edit]

Men are fighting and dying in Marja and yet it is described as an alleged town. Sort it out please. Tina Cordon (talk) 09:51, 19 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Marja does probably not exist!! German Blogs are writing, that the town was invented for NATO-propaganda and that it is a village with far less than 5000 inhabitants, if it exists at all. German source in German: http://www.ef-magazin.de/2010/02/18/1875-afghanistan-krieg-in-der-phantomstadt-mardscha Does anyone have English sorces for this? --Ausdauer (talk) 20:18, 20 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I know I've seen doubt about the pop figures elsewhere, though of course it's not our job to look at a picture and deduce something in contradiction with the available reliable sources. If you can find any similar stories I'd encourage you to add them to the article. Joshdboz (talk) 20:52, 20 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Have a look at google maps... http://maps.google.de/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=de&q=Marjeh,+Helmand,+Afghanistan&sll=51.151786,10.415039&sspn=15.18398,37.529297&ie=UTF8&cd=1&geocode=FUvs4AEdM07SAw&split=0&hq=&hnear=Marjeh,+Helmand,+Afghanistan&t=h&ll=31.51852,64.115267&spn=0.010061,0.018325&z=16

That are not 80.000 inhabitants.. It´s a small village surrounded by farms. That´s all. (Tank, 21 February 2010)

Thanks. But we aren't allowed to just look at a map and declare that no one lives there. If there are more sources like the German one above that dispute the reported figures, then by all means add them. WP is only as good as the sources allow. I don't know how ISAF-NATO arrived at the 80k, though I suspect they are including the thousands of farms just south of the "downtown". Joshdboz (talk) 22:30, 21 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Here Marja is called "an area of about 10 miles by 5 miles, an intertwined complex of villages, compounds, fields and orchards in the heart of Helmand Valley's green zone and the hub of poppy-growing country. About 100,000 people live there." [1]
The Institute for the Study of War gives the number of inhabitants for Marja "and the surrounding villages" as less than 50,000 and and says 80.000 would be the number of inhabitants of the whole district of Nad Ali. [2]
Marja seems to include the whole area south of the coordinates that are given in the wiki. Here is a map called Canals of Marja: [3]78.52.189.174 (talk) 07:26, 23 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Is Marja a town or a district? Or both? Everybody (press & ISAF) says it´s a town with 80.000 till 85.000 inhabitants, but I´ve saw a YouTube video on the official US Marine Corps channel “MarineCorpsNews” that shows an interview at the Operation Moshtarak with the afghan gouvernor of the Marjah (Marja with h) District, Haji Zahir. [4] --The real Marcoman (talk) 06:19, 22 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Huh. If you look at this map [5] Marja proper is definitely in the Nad Ali district, and this article in the Washington Post refers to Zahir as the "newly appointed mayor of Marja". Who knows, it's not exactly like these divisions mean much on the ground... Joshdboz (talk) 15:45, 22 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

As for how many people live there, I think that's irrelevant. The activities in and around the area the area of Marjeh (which does exist) are. Please reference this article. ([6]) —Preceding unsigned comment added by 75.203.98.79 (talk) 21:39, 19 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Heh, what's up with Germany? Is there some concerted campaign there to disprove the existence of an Afghan village?! Joshdboz (talk) 01:35, 23 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Heh, what's up with Germany?
I think everything here is allright, most people are watching the Olympic Games in Vancouver at TV.
Is there some concerted campaign there to disprove the existence of an Afghan village?!
No, but a lot of information from the media about this little village are completely inconsistant, and therefore it's difficult to differentiate between reality and propaganda of war. It would be interesting, if an independent journalist can find one or more real inhabitants from Marja to give some detailed facts about this place. I'm very curious about that. 79.218.10.59 (talk) 02:24, 24 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Survey[edit]

  • Support, as nom. walk victor falk talk 10:11, 18 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • Mainly support - but a bit concerned about madraseh as that is a variant spelling of madrasah. And also Lejay in books is mainly the French surname fr:Lejay, although we have no Lejay sports stubs which is what usually fills surname pages. In ictu oculi (talk) 14:59, 18 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Re. Lejay, there is the principle of avoiding pre-emptive disambiguation, to facilitate a natural evolution 1st article "X" => 2nd "X (dab)" per wp:twodabs => 3+ articles with "X (disambigution)" dab and decision which if any is wp:primarytopic. walk victor falk talk 15:33, 18 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
On madraseh, can we pull that one? In ictu oculi (talk) 14:58, 19 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Everyting I know of Arabic transliteration is from that link, so I have no idea how likely madraseh is as an alternative spelling. walk victor falk talk 16:45, 19 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Well it's complicated by Persian/Iranian as well. But thanks for pulling it. Lejay is of minor interest since no one is ever going to translate those two bios from fr.wp. In ictu oculi (talk) 00:18, 20 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Actually scratch that, on closer look the lawyer is actually the creator of Lejay's Bible. In ictu oculi (talk) 00:24, 20 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Guy Michel Lejay, given that the first name "Gui-Michel" is missing in many references to "Lejay's Polyglott" there will certainly need to be at the minimum a hat note. I think a dab at Lejay would be more appropriate. In ictu oculi (talk) 00:40, 20 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, let Lejay be a dab. walk victor falk talk 06:55, 22 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Many thanks, I have done that then at Lejay and interwiki linked to the fr.wp dab page. In ictu oculi (talk) 06:00, 25 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support, minus Madraseh, per In ictu. That spelling shows up in some numbers on a Google Books search. Redirect to Madrasa (the spelling of that article). Dohn joe (talk) 21:03, 19 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
