Move[edit]

Uh, Google search of Marja Afghanistan gets 196,000 hits, while Marjah Afghanistan gets 26,700. I don't really see the logic for the move. Joshdboz (talk) 04:55, 4 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hah, Google apparently likes to play games. Today the first search has dropped to 124,000 hits and the second jumped near tenfold to 225,000. For reference, NYT and WaPo, apparently use Marja, while WSJ and Times (UK) use Marjah. Any suggestions? Joshdboz (talk) 11:14, 13 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I think it makes absolutely no sense comparing statistical data from Google. Better one should make a correct transcription from the native name مارجهaccording to the conventions for names in Wikipedia. JasN (talk) 21:23, 16 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Does Marja exist or doesn't it?[edit]

Marja does probably not exist!! German Blogs are writing, that the town was invented for NATO-propaganda and that it is a village with far less than 5000 inhabitants, if it exists at all. I know I've seen doubt about the pop figures elsewhere, though of course it's not our job to look at a picture and deduce something in contradiction with the available reliable sources. That are not 80.000 inhabitants.. It´s a small village surrounded by farms. That´s all. (Tank, 21 February 2010)

Thanks. But we aren't allowed to just look at a map and declare that no one lives there. If there are more sources like the German one above that dispute the reported figures, then by all means add them. WP is only as good as the sources allow. I don't know how ISAF-NATO arrived at the 80k, though I suspect they are including the thousands of farms just south of the "downtown". Joshdboz (talk) 22:30, 21 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Here Marja is called "an area of about 10 miles by 5 miles, an intertwined complex of villages, compounds, fields and orchards in the heart of Helmand Valley's green zone and the hub of poppy-growing country. About 100,000 people live there." [1]
The Institute for the Study of War gives the number of inhabitants for Marja "and the surrounding villages" as less than 50,000 and and says 80.000 would be the number of inhabitants of the whole district of Nad Ali. [2]

Is Marja a town or a district? Or both? Everybody (press & ISAF) says it´s a town with 80.000 till 85.000 inhabitants, but I´ve saw a YouTube video on the official US Marine Corps channel “MarineCorpsNews” that shows an interview at the Operation Moshtarak with the afghan gouvernor of the Marjah (Marja with h) District, Haji Zahir. Huh. If you look at this map [5] Marja proper is definitely in the Nad Ali district, and this article in the Washington Post refers to Zahir as the "newly appointed mayor of Marja". No, but a lot of information from the media about this little village are completely inconsistant, and therefore it's difficult to differentiate between reality and propaganda of war. It would be interesting, if an independent journalist can find one or more real inhabitants from Marja to give some detailed facts about this place. Guy Michel Lejay, given that the first name "Gui-Michel" is missing in many references to "Lejay's Polyglott" there will certainly need to be at the minimum a hat note. I think a dab at Lejay would be more appropriate. In ictu oculi (talk) 00:40, 20 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
