Date confusion

Article says first Macy parade was in 1929 but then goes on to discuss things happening in earlier years. What were the real years? How many years (and which) was the parade in NJ before moving to NY? WikiParker (talk) 16:59, 28 November 2007 (UTC)

Article says NYC and Detroit started same year. Actually Detroit's first parade was joint with Windsor and was in 1905. 68.51.238.69 (talk) 14:42, 28 November 2013 (UTC)

"Macy's Day Parade"

_ _ Unless they are being paid not to, New Yorkers say "Macy's Day Parade". Woody Allen, the quintessential New Yorker, had his own character in Broadway Danny Rose do so. Professional journalists covering it on the TV news do so. "Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade" has 158,000 Google hits, but "Macy's Day Parade" gets 133,000 hits for written references. The formal NY Times, which still calls newsmakers "Mr. <surname>" in subsequent references, has "60 of about 79" for

"Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade" site:nytimes.com

but nevertheless one (4th 'graph) for

"Macy's Day Parade" site:nytimes.com

The hipper Village Voice has "11 of about 13" for the formal version, and "5 of 5" for

"Macy's Day Parade" site:villagevoice.com

Again, all of these written.
_ _ I've got no problem with the title being the formal version, but i'm adding

usually the "Macy's Day Parade" in informal contexts

and not only bcz the needed rdr requires it.

We call it the "Macy's Parade". 24.4.131.142 05:07, 28 September 2007 (UTC)

Partial rewrite

I've trimmed and rewritten some portions of the page. In some cases, there was a lot of detail that isn't necessary for an encyclopedia article (like the names of the organizers), and in others, the information didn't meet NPOV (e.g., the use of words like "sadly" and "unfortunately"). I think that the page is a much nicer read now. but I do welcome corrections/additions (just please don't wholesale-revert or undo it). —LrdChaos (talk) 17:18, 18 October 2006 (UTC)

I've just reverted the edits by Maxx151 and 70.23.21.115, citing the addition of NPOV, unencyclopedic material. I don't want it to seem like I'm protecting "my" version of the page, so I figure I should explain a little as why. (For ease of viewing, this is a diff between my original rewritten version and the last edit before my revert).
I don't think that we need a whole paragraph devoted to a book; the book is already mentioned in the references section, and that's all we need. This article is about the parade, not about the book.
Secondly, there's no reason to list the names of the people involved in organizing the parade, especially in the way that it's been done here (by saying that "under [their] leadership ... the future looks even more joyful and exciting".
The material about past perfomances needs to be sourced, and the use of phrases as "many fondly remember" doesn't seem like the statement ever could be. A more neutral phrasing of some of the more notable performers over the years would be a much better fit.
The additions about the television coverage are likewise unsourced violations of NPOV. You would need to cite a source that makes these claims. The last bit (mostly 70.23.21.115's edits) really need no explanation; it just reads like one person's small rant about the coverage. —LrdChaos (talk) 14:01, 19 October 2006 (UTC)

video game balloons

I removed the part about 1993 having Sonic being the first video game balloon. It was just thrown in the middle of the history paragraph for no reason. Also, if that is so important, perhaps a section on Parade Firsts would be better, such as the first time a tv character became a balloon, etc... Sabalon 02:17, 26 November 2006 (UTC)

Looks like someone just kept rolling with that. Why is it relevant which was the first black or latino character? Superman, Ronald McDonald, and Pikachu are all from faraway lands and planets. It's rampant PC nonsense to point out specific groups as more special than others. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 75.73.70.113 (talk) 23:06, 15 April 2009 (UTC)

Underdog Reference on Reba

On an an epsisode of Reba, Van and Buzzard, a minor character were talking as they were watching the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade and they were disappionted that Underdog was replaced. I am wondering how long Underdog was in the parade? Mr. C.C. 16:15, 10 August 2007 (UTC)

Barney

  • One year the wind was so strong that the Barney balloon flew away from the rest of the parade.

Does anyone have any reference to this? And what year was that? Ryan Holloway (talk) 15:06, 23 November 2007 (UTC)

Bamberger's parade

An earlier version of this article claimed that the parade started at Bamberger's Department Store, and was transferred to Macy's. Someone just tried to reinsert that into the article today. That is false. L. Bamberger & Co. held its first Thanksgiving parade in 1931, seven years after Macy's first. M&M's Balloon Incident: Free M&M's

Under "Incidents and Injuries", the paragraph that discusses the 2005 incident where the M&M's chocolate candies balloon got caught on a lamp post and the debris injured two sisters standing nearby: I've removed the last sentence of this paragraph that simply states, "Also, the sisters got a lifetime supply of M&M's." There has been a "citation needed" tag on that sentence since November 2010 and I've tried to find a reliable source that can back-up this claim, but can't. Considering those two points, I think I'm safe in removing it. —Schaea (talk) 08:08, 21 November 2011 (UTC)

The relative age of Christmas Thanksgiving parades

The Macy’s article states it is tied for the second oldest parade in the US with the Philadelphia parade being older by a few years. The Peoria Santa Claus parade however began in 1888 making it far older than any of the three cited and the Peoria parade is still on going annually. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 174.213.161.212 (talk) 04:08, 2 December 2021 (UTC)

The musical "Grand Hotel" performed at the parade in 1989, not 1991 as is currently listed. Also, the musical "Forever Plaid" performed at the 1990 parade. 69.121.205.226 (talk) 16:10, 14 November 2022 (UTC)

Wolverine

The 1995 and '96 lineups both mention an appearance by Wolverine. Both instances link to the animal but I would assume are actually referring to the comics character. Can anyone confirm whether that's right or not? QuietHere (talk) 16:12, 24 November 2022 (UTC)

Misspelling edit request

Under the "Balloons" subtopic, the "Novelty balloons" table's last row has the misspelling "forth" instead of "fourth".

Currently

"Green and Red Striped Candy Cane, Pumpkins (forth version)"

Should be

"Green and Red Striped Candy Cane, Pumpkins (fourth version)" 154.178.149.130 (talk) 20:15, 18 February 2023 (UTC)

The Ask Jeeves balloon shows Jeeves, a different character. Can you change link to Ask.com, since it makes this much sense? 2601:246:8202:5D00:4818:E895:153C:BB7D (talk) 01:22, 17 September 2023 (UTC)

List of performers and balloons

Why was this page butchered? I think having all the performers and balloons listed was essential to the parade's unique history. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2603:7080:5706:59A:9D3:9181:3D9C:B2CF (talk) 02:43, 23 January 2024 (UTC)

That was mainly because most of the sources / information came from the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade Wiki on Fandom, which included the balloon list. While I'd argue it is the best source for information on the parade, it is also not allowed to be used as a source as it could easy be manipulated and thus unreliable. 1927 claim

I noticed the parade's page now labels 1927 as the year giant balloons were introduced to the parade - they were not introduced until 1928. A simple Google search may lead you to say otherwise, but we have footage of the 1927 parade, with no balloon in site. Newspaper articles from 1927 also make no mention of giant balloons.[1] BuggleJuggle (talk) 14:40, 30 November 2023 (UTC)

@BuggleJuggle: I absolutely appreciate your desire to get this right, but the approach you've taken here amounts to original research / impermissible synthesis. We can't look at primary sources and conclude, on our own, that an absence of evidence is evidence of absence. On the other hand, we have Grippo, a reasonably detailed secondary source (even if I find it a bit fanboyish in tone), published by a reasonably reliable publisher, which, based on research with Macy's, Goodyear, and other sources, concludes that there were air-inflated balloons in the 1927 parade, complete with photographs that, I suppose, could be mis-dated, but aren't obviously attributable to any other year either. It seems quite plausible that, competing against much larger papier-mâché figures, the ~10-feet air-inflated balloons in '27 just didn't get any press coverage, or, if they did, that that press coverage happens to have not been digitized. (Note that, per Grippo p. 14, Macy's did not make the '27 balloons itself, so there may not have been press releases etc. about them.)
Anyways, I've written something that I hope makes clear the relevance of both '27 (first balloons) and '28 (first giant helium balloons). Let me know what you think. -- Tamzin[cetacean needed] (they|xe) 14:48, 3 March 2024 (UTC)
When it comes to this 1927 / 1928 rumour, it's not exactly easy for me to determine which is exactly when the balloons were introduced. Two Akron Beacon Journal newspapers from 1947 & 1958 mention 1928; while the earliest siting of 1927 I could find there was in 1954... which is also from the Akron Beacon Journal.
As for the last part, while I do think 1928 should no longer be the year listed, I think that a note indicating that the exact year the balloons debuted is desputed could be added, akin to how the Troubles page handles when it began. BuggleJuggle (talk) 21:51, 5 March 2024 (UTC)
Both of those sources say that '28 is when Goodyear started making the balloons, not when the first balloons were used in the parade. So that's consistent with other sources, which don't say that Goodyear made the '27 balloons. I'd be fine with a footnote if there's an actual conflict among sources of equal reliability, but so far I'm not seeing that. -- Tamzin[cetacean needed] (they|xe) 14:27, 7 March 2024 (UTC)
