Ethnicity categories[edit]

So he was born in Ukraine. But he moved to the US when aged only 5, and did all his training there, before undertaking further studies in Paris, Berlin etc.

Surely he was thoroughly Americanised, and it's misleading to categorise him as "Ukrainian classical violinist" or "Ukrainian Jew". Comments? -- Jack of Oz ... speak! ... 20:07, 18 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I imagine this must be covered by a Wikipedia policy somewhere, but I don't know what it is. On my own I would probably call him Ukrainian-American, and maybe note that he was from a region that was governed by various countries at different times--at the time of his birth, by Russia. But do we call Thomas Jefferson and John Adams "Englishmen"? What's the general policy? DSatz (talk) 17:02, 1 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
