Untitled[edit]

I drive by Loch Leven (the south shore road by the bird sanctuary) every day on the way to work and the satellite photo doesn't tie up with the surrounding geography. Where's Benarty Hill? It's a HUGE feature of the landscape on the south shore of the loch. I suggest the photograph is not that of Loch Leven near Kinross. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 95.146.91.74 (talk) 10:44, 8 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

It is Loch Leven. Check Google Maps if in doubt. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 82.27.247.113 (talk) 20:23, 19 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

It is Loch Leven. It's photographed from a position in the bird sanctuary on Benarty Hill, looking north (which is why you can't see the hill (you're on it, it's behind you!).86.165.201.235 (talk) 01:16, 16 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

One point: while the 'loch' in loch Leven is scots corrupted/adopted from gaelic, the 'Leven' isn't. It's old british or britonic (the ancestor language to modern Welsh, and the ancient language in -probably- all of the main island of the British Isles - called 'Great Britain'). leven means 'river', I think. There are rivers called the River Leven all over Great Britain, not just in Scotland but also in Wales and England (where there never were any Gaels).86.165.201.235 (talk) 01:16, 16 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Having significantly expanded and edited the List of rivers of Wales I know of no 'Leven's there - but happy to be corrected on this). The toponymist W.F.H. Nicolaisen derives the name from a supposed root 'lemo-' meanig elm. Ekwall suggests a link with Welsh 'llynfi' (smooth) for the Lancashire river of this name - Cumbric would have been spoken hereabouts I think. cheers Geopersona (talk) 20:16, 2 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The "Gaels" you speak of are also known as "Scots". :) 86.177.47.18 (talk) 09:32, 18 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
