"Lopsided"[edit]

@ViperSnake151: Could you be more specific re: your complaint on the NYT paragraph? It makes the case that the financial stakes are high for both sides of the dispute, so I'm uncertain how this tips to one side or the other. What would you suggest as a fix? Thanks. Barte (talk) 15:46, 27 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

The statement seems written from a POV in favour of broadcasters. Both sides need to be reflected equally. ViperSnake151  Talk  17:25, 27 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I removed the statement, leaving just the stats re: both broadcast revenue stream and subscription fees. Barte (talk) 14:55, 28 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Geofencing sentence[edit]

@Mrschimpf: I don't understand your addition: "Viewers are restricted from viewing stations outside of their market through geofencing on their viewing platform, though if traveling to another Locast market, they can view that market's stations instead." Isn't this just saying that viewers can only get Locast where Locast offers the service? Barte (talk) 17:16, 30 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

The way I understand it. Say you normally live in the Phoenix market and view Locast in that market. You can't watch other Locast markets while in the Phoenix area. However, you can use your Locast account to view other Locast markets when you are physically in that market.Msw1002 (talk) 18:13, 30 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, I see what you're aiming at. I propose moving that thought to the first paragraph as it describes a fundamental part of how the service works. How about:
"The service is free, but requires a minimum donation of US$5 per month to view programming without interruption. Viewers must log in from a Locast-supported media market and can only view channels local to that market." Barte (talk) 22:26, 30 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I see your point as well. I will let Mrschimpf add their thoughts to the discussion to their original addition.Msw1002 (talk) 00:04, 31 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
That's what I was trying to get across, yes, that Locast utilizes Nielsen market boundaries to enforce which stations can be seen where; for instance if my IP, either wired or through a cell tower, was located in Dane County, Wisconsin, I could watch WMTV for NBC, but not WTMJ-TV, but if that IP was in Jefferson County, it's reversed. Wherever the point is best made in the lede is fine (I got it this morning in my market, thus my addition). Nate (chatter) 03:31, 31 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you both. I changed the summary lede and added similar wording in the Availability section. Barte (talk) 04:47, 31 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Suspended service[edit]

Is Locast suspended for now or for good? The Hollywood Reporter says "at least for now". But the announcement from Locast did not, as I would have expected, characterize the suspension as "temporary". Going on that, my inclination is to describe the service in the past tense. And if it ever gets resuscitated, change the tense back again. Barte (talk) 16:30, 2 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I suggest wait a few days. If no clarification what they mean by suspension by then, then change it to "was". They never mentioned what they are doing for donors setup with automatic monthly donations (if it was just taken out) due to the suspension. Msw1002 (talk) 17:00, 2 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Agreed. There could well be a follow-on statement or additional reporting. But barring those over the next few days, Locast is past tense. Barte (talk) 18:08, 2 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Edmund Lee of the New York Times is reporting that Locast will not re-offer the service, even though it will appeal to three-judge panel from the Second Circuit Court. "If the decision is overturned, it could offer a blueprint for other similarly designed services to operate." I think that's the clarification we're looking for. Barte (talk) 22:25, 2 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I revamped the lead to emphasize the legal issues and put the section in the past tense (it was already partly there anyhow). I noted that the New York Times is reporting future plans--an appeal but not a re-start. If Locast itself announces more, we can add it. Barte (talk) 17:02, 3 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
