The tragedy of Lloyd Metzler

Metzler not only was well trained in mathematics, but was also a clear writer.

I do not have access to the Palgrave biography, and anyone who does should feel free to correct me.

In the early 1950s, when he was at the height of his powers, Metzler was diagnosed with a major brain tumour. Surgery saved his life, but destroyed his intellect, a huge loss for academic economics. When I was at Chicago in the late 1960s, he had already not taught for a while. He published his last article in the late 1950s. My vague impression is that he had ceased teaching around 1960. I definitely heard that he had become completely incapable of teaching, and that the damage to his intellect worsened with time. In 1959, Chicago gave a professorial chair to Harry Johnson who, like Metzler, was both a trade theorist and monetary economist. It may have made this appointment precisely because Metzler's case was seen as hopeless.

The entry says that he was affiliated with Chicago until 1975. In fact, he had resigned in all but name many years before. I suspect that Chicago, out of decency, continued his 1950s salary until 1975, when he turned 62, the earliest age at which one qualifies for Social Security.

I once met someone who attended the banquet for Metzler's 60th birthday in 1973, who told me that Metzler was in a wheelchair, had to be pushed, was unable to converse much less speak, and had to be spoon fed by his wife. Nobody present said anything.111.69.237.247 (talk) 05:52, 28 July 2011 (UTC)
