"removed"?[edit]

Under "Date listed", what does "removed" mean (see the table entries at the bottom of the table)? I don't think it means when the bridge was taken down. (There are too many identical dates for that to be likely.) I think it really means "delisted" (removed from the list of NRHPs). Any suggestions for a better term? "Delisted" is a real word; I would go for that instead of "removed".--BillFlis (talk) 23:52, 10 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Contributing Structure?[edit]

Should this list include bridges that are listed as a contributing structure in a registered Historic district? For example Phoenixville Historic District's Nomination explicitly lists one iron truss bridge as a contributing structure. I believe it is the still existant Phoenix column bridge across French Creek by the Phoenix Iron Works foundry building. --J Clear (talk) 14:07, 28 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Slow to load[edit]

This page is great but takes forever to load, even on a reasonably new computer with a reasonably fast (cable) connection. What are your thoughts about possibly breaking it up by county? Martindelaware (talk) 06:58, 13 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

This page takes FOREVER to load. What is wrong? Great information, but I probably won't come back. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 96.255.166.61 (talk) 23:17, 9 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I broke it into covered bridges (201) and Other (190). That should make it a bit better. Smallbones (talk) 02:30, 2 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Cross-reference to HABS/HAER?[edit]

It might be useful to have a column indicating which bridges have been documented by the Historic American Buildings Survey (HABS) and Historic American Engineering Record (HAER). Before I go through the effort of adding such a column, I'd appreciate your thoughts about whether this is the appropriate place for HABS/HAER cross-references, and if so, the best format. Just the record number, e.g., HAER PA-500? A link to the HABS/HAER catalog record on the Library of Congress website, e.g., HAER PA-500? Martindelaware (talk) 07:06, 13 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

It seems reasonable for the table to have some column where other information such as HAER and other external links could be added. It was User:NE2 who set up this one and all other state-specific NRHP bridges list-tables, working with User:Elkman. I put in links to these state NRHP bridge lists from the List of bridges in the United States article. There probably are numerous bridges covered by HAER that were never NRHP-listed though; I know that is the case in other states and in Puerto Rico. The current table covers just currently- and formerly-NRHP-listed bridges in the state, and the article title is pretty clearly limiting to NRHP ones. There are some other notable PA bridges listed at List of bridges in the United States#Pennsylvania also. I wonder whether the current table should be merged into a unified List of bridges in Pennsylvania which covers them all. Martindelaware, if you would be willing to try drafting something like that for PA, perhaps it could be a model for dealing with other states. (This conversation has already been announced by Martindelaware at WikiProject Bridges, by the way. I'll ask NE2 to comment here, too.) doncram (talk) 16:37, 13 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Added Knox Covered Bridge, Chester County, PA in Valley Forge HD[edit]

Nobody objected at the Wikipedia talk:WikiProject National Register of Historic Places, but please read the following info if you object and want to remove it.

Knox Covered Bridge, aka Valley Forge Covered Bridge, is a contributing structure in the Valley Forge Historic District. It is also 1 of 15 covered bridges left in Chester County (see http://www.ohiobarns.com/covbri/pa/ches/pachescb.html), 13 of which are on National Register of Historic Places listings in Chester County, Pennsylvania and the List of bridges on the National Register of Historic Places in Pennsylvania. A PDF for the Multiple Property Submission (Thematic Resources) on the covered bridges in Chester County here, says "Four of the bridges are already listed on the National Register (3 individually, 1 as part of Valley Forge National Military Park)." It also lists the Knox Bridge as a Burr Arch built 1865 and "{NHL 1-20-61)". But the Knox Covered Bridge is left off our lists. [Interestingly the 15th bridge, Hayes Clark CB built 1871, was not submitted, perhaps because the construction date is listed as 1971 in the MP Submission]. Smallbones (talk) 05:55, 13 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Prompted me to check and then correct List of NHLs in PA and Valley Forge National Historical Park articles to give 1961 NHL designation date for Valley Forge. About scope of this list-article and others like it, I think it is fine to include bridges that are NRHP contributing properties like this one. Actually I think the list-article scope perhaps should be further expanded, to cover all historic bridges that are still standing, with historic defined as being listed on any national, state, or local historic register. In New York State I am aware that there are historic covered bridges that are state-listed but which do not meet National Register's stricter listing standards because they were moved or altered in some way. Probably there are similar cases in PA. For readers, I think a broader list is better. I'd rather have a broad list than have a NRHP historic bridges list and a historic but non-NRHP-listed bridges list. doncram (talk) 15:22, 13 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
