Admirals of the Fleet

Commencing with Lord Torrington at the head of the list, all Admirals of the Fleet are listed except for the following. Did any of them hold the rank of admiral?

King Edward VII Kaiser Wilhelm II Tsar Nicholas II Prince Henry of Prussia all later Admirals of the Fleet aside from the Duke of Edinburgh (who never held the rank of admiral) are already listed

• I've been searching DNB (people dead by 1900) for word "admiral".

• the page http://www.dreadnoughtproject.org/tfs/index.php/Royal_Navy_Flag_Officers_of_the_Great_War has LOTS of candidates...anyone whose "final rank" is Admiral(retired or not) or AotF.

• I am a little uncomfortable extending the time frame before the Queen Anne era because it seems that back then the distinction between ranks and postings was loose.

Royal Naval Biography

This book's text is searchable online at https://en.wikisource.org/wiki/Royal_Naval_Biography but it has issues. It's supposedly a snapshot of the Navy List at a certain point listing people by rank held at that time but it was published in sections between 1823 and 1835 with the result that it

• calls Sir Henry Nicholls (KCB 1820) as "senior vice admiral of the red" (person next in line to become full admiral) in his bio
• has post-captains by date of rank out to 1831 even though Sir Henry's name led the list of full admirals promoted in 1825

(and every survivor of those promoted to vice admiral of the red in 1825 had become a full admiral by 1830).

I am going to list their entries as ordered by rank here, bolding any who are on the list in the article, deleting any verified as not reaching the rank of Admiral. I will not create links at least to start with (Sir Henry Nicholls KCB aforesaid has no article and features on neither the Henry Nicholls nor Henry Nichols disambiguation pages).

I will note gazetted promotions to persons listed by rank and date:

• ADM=Admiral (of the Blue or higher)
• VAR= Vice admiral of the Red
• VAW= Vice admiral of the White
• VAB= Vice admiral of the Blue
• RAR/RAW/RAB for the respective Rear admirals...

So far I have copied the post-captains down through 1811. The RABs of 1846 became post-captains in 1808-10. 1804 captains were VAB eligible by 1847.

I'll omit the "superannuated rear admirals" and "retired captains" but more to come.

I will be cross-checking with A Dictionary of Naval Biography (1849 but alphabetical) as well as Gazettes & Navy Lists and Haydn's Book of Dignities. I need to seek out later promotions to see who made it to Admiral and note that the listed captains include admirals at least as late as William Fanshawe Martin (died 1895) with Alexander Milne (died 1896) among the Commanders. 1945 Navy List candidates to check for promotion

The practice of promoting by strict order of seniority dates at least to 1718 and from looking at Navy Lists during WW II it was still observed then with the sole exception of not every admiral getting to be an Admiral of the Fleet. The order in which men became Admirals was invariably that in which they had become Vice-Admirals, Rear-Admirals, and Captains. So just like the RNB list above that basically recapitulates 1820s Navy Lists, here are the flag officers in the last Archive.org Navy List (July 1945) who come after those listed here as admirals postwar including some known to have made it... bold means already listed...

Introduction

Hi There is no mention of the promotional structure of Admirals prior to 1864 in regards to Admirals of the Colour and which rank superseded which for example an Admiral of the white was only outranked by Admiral of the Fleet until 1805 there after he was outranked by an Admiral of the red and the Admiral of the Fleet. I wouldn't mind the final ranks being mentioned though this was basically a function of how long one survived after reaching the level of Admiral. RNB however only mentions those who were were of particular colors when that book was compiled.LE (talk) 03:58, 2 February 2019 (UTC)

That's true but Sir William Laird Clowes seven volume book series 'The Royal Navy, A History from the Earliest Times to 1900' mentions Admirals of Colour throughout also Issac Schomberg's five volume book series lists admirals of colour by naval station prior to 1802. John Charnock's 6 volume book series from 1660 lists Admiral of Colour I have all of these books which are used as sources in modern books I have.--Navops47 (talk) 06:29, 2 February 2019 (UTC)

In the color days anyone who was an Admiral started out Blue, with rare exceptions; those who lasted long enough became White, and some of those lasted long enough to become Red. It would take a lot of checking to sort them out.LE (talk) 23:08, 4 February 2019 (UTC)

Early Admirals

I also note that the list currently starts at 1708 the articles Admiral of the North, Admiral of the South, Admiral of the North and West, and Admiral of the West all appointed admirals albeit English Navy between 1294–1412 and also Admiral of the Narrow Seas has admirals dating from 1552. other pages with Admirals in command Downs Station, Western Squadron, Commander-in-Chief, English Channel, Leeward Islands Station, Lisbon Station, there is a Template:Royal Navy fleets listing commands and stations.--Navops47 (talk) 08:07, 1 February 2019 (UTC)

1708 is on par with the List of British Army full generals and frankly is about as far back as we can go while admiral was clearly a rank and not a job. Even starting where we do there is the issue of Stafford Fairborne whose name brings up no results searching the gazette and who basically vanished from the ranks after losing his place as functioning head of the navy. He survived until 1742 but other men passed up the list to Admiral of the Fleet even though it was supposed to be reserved for the senior admiral: it was basically a command from which he had been relieved, not a rank, at that time. To have a vague responsibility for defending certain ports or coasts is not the same as being at a certain high level of a professional hierarchy.LE (talk) 04:06, 2 February 2019 (UTC)

Hello I have three books on British naval history by Nicholas A. M. Rodger covering the years 660 to 1964. In 'The Safeguard of the Sea: a Naval History of Britain, Volume 1, 660–1649 (1997)' Appendix V Admirals and Officials pp.504-510 he lists all English Admirals officially appointed from 1295 to 1408 his source the Patent roll's. In Chapter 10 'Captains and Admirals 1204 to 1455. 'Admirals were appointed to command areas on a geographical basis into fleets or admiralties' 'They were responsible for assembling fleets for particular operations', 'organizing naval expeditions to Scotland and Ireland, Britanny, Gascony and Flanders., 'naval recruitment and naval administration', 'superintending the 'Sea Guard' Coastal militia for all coastal districts of England' and 'administering admiralty courts' and as these Admirals were clearly paid for their roles. In the same book 'Appendix IV Rates of Pay' mentions payment and pay scales as early as 1172 a job is by definition a paid position as modern admirals are. So I wouldn't call these vague responsibilities. All of Rodgers books chart the development Royal Navy under the headings Administration, Operations, Ships, Social History and Officers so we have a cohesive narrative which is important to provide readers with this information. If your going to set this list only from 1708 for the reasons you have stated please explain this in the lead section and provide sources that clearly state there was no form of organised structure nor were Admirals responsibilities the same prior to 1708 than they were after 1708.--Navops47 (talk) 06:14, 2 February 2019 (UTC)

As a practical matter the Act of Union 1707 makes a logical dividing line between the Royal Navy of Great Britain and of the former constituents. Gradual evolutions still covered substantial changes as what qualifies for logical coverage emerged from what doesn't. There is again a difference between having a responsibility/job and having a rank. If one was paid when and because one was C-in-C Penzance it's not the same as having an entrenched pay rate for an earned rank held irrespective of one's assignment. Dating needs changing

According to official and scholarly sources the birth of the modern British navy became the Royal Navy in 1660 following the restoration of the Monarchy. Here, supporting this date from this book and a single navy supporting this date here it was Charles II who named the English fleet the "Royal Navy," and it needs to be in line with the History of the Royal Navy who's open sentence is 'The official history of the Royal Navy began with the formal establishment of the Royal Navy as the national naval force of the Kingdom of England in 1660, following the Restoration of King Charles II to the throne'. If not you need to explain this omission otherwise readers might assume there was no commissioned officers of the Royal Navy holding the rank of Admiral prior to 1707 that are listed in this book this would also sort out your overlap issues of appointments thank you.--Navops47 (talk) 15:36, 5 February 2019 (UTC)

Sticking with 1707/1708 avoids a period of truly chaotic appointments (vice- and rear-admiralships were also treated as postings rather than ranks) as well as the term as Lord High Admiral of Prince George of Denmark. Hello please do your research correctly according to the British National Archives tell us the rank not an administrative posting they were introduced in the 17th century not 18th century and I know for a fact command flags for vice-admirals and rear-admirals were introduced in the (17th century) this is supported by the the Royal Navy National Museum that states 'The ranks of Admiral, Vice Admiral, and Rear Admiral arose directly out of the organisation of the fleet in 1620 into three parts' source here therefore your dating is incorrect if you leave as is it will be changed.--Navops47 (talk) 17:27, 8 February 2019 (UTC)

I came across a quote referring to the situation in 1699 where someone could move from serving as vice-admiral to rear-admiral if someone senior to him showed up.I have no interest in covering pre-Union-promoted admirals in this article...neither does Takvaal...start another one for them if you like. May a respectfully remind you of Wikipedia:Ownership of content and we also don't need multiple lists of Royal Navy Admirals e.g. (List of Royal Navy Admirals before the Act of Union in 1707 covering the years (1620 to 1706) based on commissioning rank criteria or List of Royal Navy Admirals (1660-1706) based on the actual naming date that makes no sense. It is consistent to be in line with both the lists of Admiral of the Fleet (1688-1995) and I am trying to avoid an Edit conflict with you over your dating criteria so we need to find a compromise it makes sense that possibly a List of Naval Royal admirals (1500-1660) would then be the logical dating progression to compliment it.--Navops47 (talk) 18:36, 8 February 2019 (UTC)

The quality of the article requires that earlier admirals be excluded. Going back even one First Naval Lord or one Admiral of the Fleet from the current beginning would bring in ambiguities where what we are trying to present as consistent ranks were treated as offices by tenure that could be given up. I have put a lot of effort into compiling something I regard as worthwhile...I will regard all that effort as wasted if those earlier admirals are not excluded.LE (talk) 01:44, 10 February 2019 (UTC)

Page Move

I have moved this page under a new title as the previous title List of Royal Navy admirals without a date descriptor it simply redundant and is misleading to readers as this article is completely at odds with these articles Royal Navy and History of the Royal Navy which are littered with references to Admirals. The arbitrary setting of political date has nothing to do with officers receiving a royal commission to the rank of admiral. Contrary to previous discussions it is evident that a kings commission to the rank of Admiral have been granted from as early as the 14th century to serving naval officers and only issued to sea commanders after 1344. The added explanation in the introduction has been included as to not mislead readers with the assumption that the Royal Navy had no admirals prior to 1707 instead of making it incredibly difficult for them to find them. This current list is in itself an antithesis to the hard work done by editors who have created interesting and dynamic biographies of officers who have now been cut off on a personal whim. Please remember this is a collaborative project and I respectfully asked people to change the date to 1660 but this was ignored despite me highlighting Wikipedia:Ownership of content. Therefore this lack of collaboration has now left us with situation where a second and really quite unnecessary article will now have to be created in order to provided readers with a consistent chronological narrative of those officers appointed to the rank of Admiral of the Royal Navy by commission.--Navops47 (talk) 12:14, 21 February 2019 (UTC)

Its always sad when editors who have contributed a lot of work to an article cannot agree on its content. I am somewhat surprised that relevant projects were not notified to seek other interested and knowledgeable editors opinions. Reading through the history and looking at the article I feel that it is currently too long and should be split, my preference would be by centuries but I can accept splitting by dates of political entities but currently splitting out just the pre 1707 content I feel suggests that those individuals were in some way lesser admirals Lyndaship (talk) 11:36, 27 February 2019 (UTC)

Thanks for your feedback Lyndaship the reason I have not followed up with other project pages at this point is that both myself and the other two editors are also WP:Military History members and following on from some advice from a volunteer TransporterMan from the Wikipedia:Dispute resolution noticeboard this morning they advised that the matter has to be discussed extensively on the talk page first before any complaint procedures about content ownership, content or editors is raised. Your suggestion about lists of RN admirals by century actually makes a lot of of sense and would be in line with some of the categorizations of admirals we have e.g. Category:17th-century Royal Navy personnel and Category:18th-century Royal Navy personnel and so on. Your comment about lesser admirals well these are some of the lesser admirals (without listing them all) were talking about: Sir Thomas Allin, 1st Baronet, John Ashby (Royal Navy officer), Matthew Aylmer, 1st Baron Aylmer, John Berry (Royal Navy officer), Robert Blake (admiral), George Churchill (Royal Navy officer), Stafford Fairborne, John Jennings (Royal Navy officer), William Penn (Royal Navy officer) notable enough to have their own biography's.--Navops47 (talk) 03:19, 28 February 2019 (UTC)

The edit history of this article shows pretty clearly that this article was being built up rapidly with assiduous work that was abandoned when Navops47 showed up and demanded that the evolution of understanding of what the rank of admiral means be disregarded.The pre-1707 admirals simply don't fit on a strictly ordered chronological list because the distinction between rank and appointment was not sufficiently developed.They need to be excluded from such a list.12.144.5.2 (talk) 00:31, 1 November 2019 (UTC)
