Re this claim:

Leona is the German variant of the French name Léon, both meaning 'like a lioness'.[1]

This is wrong in several ways.

The source doesn't state that "Leona" is derived from the French version. It could be derived from any number of other sources, e.g. directly from the Latin.
The source doesn't state that "Léon" means "like a lionness". It doesn't. It simply means "lion". In fact, "Leona" doesn't mean "like a lionness" either, it has no lexical meaning in any of the languages in question, over and above referring to the name "Leon".
The source does state that "Leona" is German (well, "English and German", to be exact.) I question the correctness of this claim, as the source is not a reliable source. In my experience, this name is not common in German. Show me a few German persons who have this name and I'll reconsider. Fut.Perf. ☼ 05:34, 31 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
