Named afterr General Alexander Lebed?[edit]

I got the notion somewhere (though I can't cite a source; possibly a Tom Clancy novel) that the Lebed hovercraft was in fact named so by the West after contemporary Soviet General Alexander Lebed who was supposedly in command of the forces who would deploy it in a war. Lebed-type hovercraft played a key role in Red Storm Rising, where they were used with a barge transport ship to stage a surprise invasion of Iceland in the opening moves of an attack on NATO. The origin of the name is not discussed in that novel or any other novel by Clancy. Nor did he invent the gambit of capturing Iceland, either; it was well recognized on both sides that Iceland's pacifism made it vulnerable while its NATO membership made it a strategically vital target. In fact, he didn't even come up with the idea of using a disguised barge transport; this had been described in Soviet military journals and by Soviet defectors like Viktor Suvorov. However, Red Storm Rising did popularize the class, its intended strategic role, and the importance of Iceland.
