Thank You[edit]

Archived single pole issue[edit]

Archived single pole issue as settled. Dinkytown (talk) 01:57, 4 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Is it really settled? I came by this article today and spotted the "modern controversy" section and took a look at the earlier debate. There's still no proof (citations) of any kind that there really exists any "controversy" or accusations of "cultural appropriation" over the fact that some sports equipment manufacturers call their single-pole tents lavvu or any of the related terms. The whole segment seems to be original research. My own experience, which of course doesn't "prove" anything, is that at least the inhabitants of the Finnish Lapland, whether Sami or Finnish or something between in their origin, do not object to the term kota being used to describe commercial lavvu-/goahti-like contraptions. In Finland the term kota describes all such tents, and also the traditional Sami dwellings, while the term laavu means lean-to-style shelters, whether they are of permanent wooden construction or erected with either sticks and branches or tarpaulin, poles and wires (the style which is more accurately called loue). Spelling of "lavvu" to "laavu"?[edit]

It´s some error in this article about Lavvu: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lavvu. The terms of goahti (kota) and lavvu (laavu) have been confused. All the photos in the page are goahtis, not lavvus. The lavvu is not a tent-like at all! Not in any Sami area (I believe so, correct if I´m terribly wrong)... Here it´s some correct information about the lavvu: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lean-to#Laavu. (in Finnish: http://fi.wikipedia.org/wiki/Laavu). —Preceding unsigned comment added by Boahenavlle (talkcontribs) 01:14, 13 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

And one thing which I forgot to write... The reason, why I tried to write here instead of editing the lavvu-page by myself, is that my skills of English are not good enough for editing anything... —Preceding unsigned comment added by Boahenavlle (talkcontribs) 01:34, 13 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Boahenavlle - Welcome to Wikipedia. I made adjustments to what you wrote here just so it will make sense to other people reading it. You are right about the spelling of "laavu" in Finnish. The Finns, Swedes, Norwegians and Sami have different names for the same tent. Look at the beginning of the article and see that there are different names for each county. Regarding the difference between a goahti and a lavvu, go to the goahti article and look under "construction". It will tell you how the lavvu and the goahti are different.
I made corrections to the Lavvu page that you mentioned. Thank you for your suggestions. Your English is understandable so you have nothing to apologize for - Take Care... Dinkytown (talk) 03:47, 14 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Modern controversy[edit]

Seems a bit of a tempest in a teacup. No indication that Sibley mentioned a lavvu in his patent for his Sibley tent. Kortoso (talk) 02:41, 18 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
