Kalamainu'u seems to be a genuine Hawaian lizard goddess. I can find nothing about a sister, however. Bucketsofg 03:29, 29 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Just wondering whether Craig calls Kalamainu'u a goddess? I have Beckwith, she calls her a demon wife on 193 and a kupua on 200 - the Māori equivalent of kupua is tupua which is a spectre/ogre/demon type of creature rather than a god. Oh but I see that Beckwith does call her a goddess on 193 as well. Not the sort of thing I think people would worship too readily tho? I wouldn't mind a look at the original in the Hawaiian language to see what she was called there Kahuroa 10:35, 30 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Craig: "a Hawaiian lizard (mo'o) goddess from La'ie, O'ahu…". I wouldn't be surprised if the categories "goddess, demon, etc." don't always transfer neatly from one system to another. Bucketsofg 13:21, 30 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
True. And quite often (in Māori at least) the original texts do not classify the characters, rather they just mention names and actions. The categorizations may have been added by later researchers and in that sense are kind of imposed onto the culture. Kahuroa 19:18, 30 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
