Critical / commercial response, be careful...[edit]

These two sources simply do not see eye-to-eye about the opening response. That's significant.

Deccan Chronicle: "The response in advance to the movie Kaala, releasing in well over 1,800 screens worldwide on Thursday, has, however, been lukewarm. The usual hype about a Rajini movie is just not there even in Chennai, the hotbed of Rajini fan clubs. The advance bookings do not also indicate the usual fervour over a new film featuring Thalaivar."
India Today: "The film had paid premiere shows in selected countries on June 6 and positive reviews have been pouring in from all quarters. On June 7, Tamil Nadu thetares have added special early morning shows for Rajinikanth's fans. The initial response to Pa Ranjith's Kaala is extremely favourable. It looks like the low-key promotions worked its magic on the fans. Fans and critics are raving about the film saying that it is a huge treat for his fans."

Obviously those two positions are in stark opposition. India Today's write-up (which bears no journalist's name) sounds like a press release, so I'd be suspicious. I'd also be circumspect about any attempt to summarise critical/commercial response in a simple way. If we accepted India Today's write-up as legitimate and not just PR, we'd have to bring some balance to the subject by presenting contrary opinions. "India Today thought the response was positive, while Deccan Chronicle described it as lukewarm." That's how WP:NPOV works. Also noting NDTV: "Kaala recorded the lowest ever opening for a Rajinikanth film in recent times, reports news agency IANS. ... As per actor activist Vishal Krishna, the first day numbers of Kaala have been affected by the film's 'ban' in Karnataka and may be even director Pa Ranjith. Vishal Krishna, who is a member of the Tamil Nadu Films Producers' Council (TFPC), explained: "Kaalahas been unnecessarily embroiled in the Cauvery controversy."

And DNA: "A Rajinikanth movie release in Tamil Nadu is a festive event ... But the frenzy is clearly absent before the release of his latest movie "Kaala" on Thursday. ... Kaala is witnessing a less than enthusiastic response as far as advance booking of tickets for his movie is concerned. Though Kaala's opening day tickets are sold out in major multiplex and theatres in Chennai, the tickets are still available for weekend shows which is unusual for the superstar’s movie."
