Reverted edits[edit]

I reverted today's edits because they violated many Wikipedia policies. For example:

  • The article seemed to be written by Mr. Bryant's publicist. They were not written from a neutrasl point of view. See WP:NPOV.
  • Much of the added material was not sourced, or was not sourced from reliable, independent sources.
  • There was repetition of a lot of stuff, e.g., his professed achievements.
  • Incorrect capitalization of headings. See WP:HEAD.
  • Incorrect linking, capitalization, formatting of book and magazine titles, etc.
  • It described him as 'silver rights' entrepreneur, without explaining what that means. It seems to be a term that he invented, which will have no meaning to most readers.
  • Incorrect formatting of dates per MOS:DATE.

Mr. Bryant is quite capable of distributing his resume on his own. He does not need Wikipedia to do it for him, and that is not an appropriate role for an encyclopedia. Ground Zero | t 18:36, 4 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Content Dispute[edit]

@Tom1war3:: why do you not feel that this content should be included? I´ve been a fan of many racing series for some years and the video of what Bryant did is pretty clear as an egregious rule violation, in my eyes. And as it received some coverage (Jalopnik is a pretty well-known name in the world of Motorsports, in my eyes) it should be included in the article. But that´s my view on the issue. How do you justify removal of the content in question? Joel.Miles925 (talk) 14:28, 26 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Joel.Miles925:: Hi Joel, thank you for hearing my thoughts. I am new to wikipedia so please excuse any technical faux pas made in the following, or previous, interactions we've had. I apologize for reverting your changes, but I am passionate about this issue and I think it's unfair how the events transpired. I have been following this situation with John Hope Bryant, AER, Jalopnik, and VINwiki intimately since it began last Friday, April 19th, 2019. Being an amateur racing series, there is a small community in compartmentalized areas on social media where jokes were being made with talks of conspiracy to manipulate John Hope Bryant's wikipedia page in an effort to defame and vandalize. The narrative describing this incident, in the new "motorsports" section on his page, is extremely one-sided and does not accurately represent Bryant's side of the story nor list/cite his public response and was most likely added by one of these individuals maliciously. On a personal note, I believe the non-profit work Bryant's organization has done for the past 25 years is being unjustly overshadowed by this effort from internet "trolls" who are upset over a mistake that was made (which Bryant apologized for and accepted responsibility).

@Tom1war3:: Hmm, that adds a new wrinkle to it. Where on the internet are these discussions taking place, and why do they have interest in defaming Bryant?

On another note, upon review, this article is rather short for having a section that long on one incident. Perhaps we should move it to a motorsports section, detailing not only that incident (in a much shorter and less slanted way that mentions he apologised) but his prior racing career? May as well get something good out of this dispute (improving the article).

Oh, by the way-- if anyone has made any serious faux pas here, it is me. I should've opened this discussion in the first place rather than basically assuming bad faith and being an uncivil jerk as I did. Sorry about that, no ill will was intended.

However, in the future it is best to not communicate via edit summaries during these situations and instead open a dialogue with the other user, which neither of us did - it's just that you didn't know and I did, which I have no excuse for. Oops. Joel.Miles925 (talk) 15:56, 26 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Joel.Miles925:: Thank you. Understood and duly noted for the future. I appreciate that.

There are a few different threads in private motorsports themed Facebook groups. Most notably on AER's Facebook group.

Because Bryant indirectly called out this organization in the original interview on VINwiki, from what I've gathered, their members and participants feel personally attacked and believe they are entitled to retaliation.

Seeing as motorsports is a hobby for Bryant, maybe below "honors and awards" a new section can be created entitled "personal life" and have "motorsports" become a subsection of that with a rewrite of this incident detailing both sides more accurately, as you mentioned above. I could do some digging and find some information on his other experiences in motorsports (and possibly personal life too), then other folks will, presumably, chime in to fill in the remaining gaps.

@Tom1war3:: If you'd like to write that section then go ahead. I think it should probably be between biography and appointments instead, however, using other articles on this site as a guide. I'll request unprotection of the page, since this seems to be resolved. Joel.Miles925 (talk) 17:13, 28 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
