Jerry McNerney Quit West Point in Protest of Vietnam War

John, in your McNerney article, you state that McNerney quit West Point in protest of Vietnam War. I spoke with McNerney and he says he did not quit in protest. What background material can you share regarding this point? I am a graduate of West Point and spent 21 years on active duty. I am also a prior President of the West Point Society of Silicon Valley. This background information would help in determining if McNerney is another protester of Vietnam similar to John Kerry. Well, first it's not my article - see WP:OWN. Second, I don't think I posted that information - I think it was in the article before I started editing it, or was added by someone else (the citation is not done in my style). Also, as far as I know, no one has provided an acceptable source that says otherwise. Finally, negative info (for example, that he flunked out, or possibly - depending on how one looks at it - that he just quit) requires extra proof, per WP:BLP.

Content in wikipedia is governed by three policies: WP:NOR (no original research), WP:RS (reliable sources), and WP:V (verifiable info). In particular, the last states Articles should contain only material that has been published by reliable sources.

For the wording in question, the article on McNerney cites the following source (footnote 2): Hank Shaw, "Politics turns to war in Pombo's district", The Record, ONI Stockton, Inc., 2006-05-17 I followed the link for that cite, and found the following text, in the newspaper article:

McNerney, who as a cadet at West Point was headed toward a career in the Army before he quit the military academy to protest the war in Vietnam, said this war is very different.

So, while I don't doubt your word (per WP:AGF) that you spoke to McNerney, my hands are tied with regard to changing the wikipedia article - the wording in the wikipedia article clearly comes from a newspaper article which meets the three content requirements, while what you just posted doesn't meet any of the three.

If McNerney had, for example, something on his campaign website that said something different, or he was quoted in a different, also relible source as saying something different about why he left, or the Army or West Point published something official about this, then of course the wikipedia article should be changed. Perhaps in response to this debate, all reference to his time at West Point was whitewashed from the article. I added it back in, without reference to why he left.

I found a second credibe source concerning why he left. The Almanac of American Politics (2008 edition) states "he left after two years because he opposed the war in Vietnam" (p.195) —Preceding unsigned comment added by 208.54.4.74 (talk) 20:24, 7 July 2009 (UTC)

infobox assumed office date

The infobox says he assumed office on January 4 but the Twentieth Amendment to the United States Constitution section 1 says Congressional terms expire at noon on January 3. I'm guessing that means McNerney became a member of the 110th Congress at noon on Jan 3 and that the confusion is because the 110th didn't actually go into session until Jan 4. If this is correct then there are probably a lot of congressional infoboxes needing fixing. Anyone know? 67.117.130.181 11:31, 24 January 2007 (UTC)

Flawed Sources

The article praised mcnerney for saving the planet and being an "expert", etc. The information came directly from an op/ed written by the congressman himself. In addition, the information is from the congressman bio on his website, clearly npov. (In fact, the entire entry is almost entirely taken from his web site. Apparently some people mistake wiki for a campaign advertisement.)

Citation 11 includes information based off of a quote from a interview found in a newspaper. While the paper itself is respectable, the source of the quote is biased and makes assertions without providing any reliable source. Therefore the claim that the 9th District is more democratic can not be supported reliably by this citationLjprice9398 (talk) 07:33, 7 February 2019 (UTC)

2013 Election Results

I added them, but could only provide a link to the Sacramento Bee elections results. Can't find anything on the California Secretary of State website, although the SacBee cites the SoS as the source of its data. I would have liked to use a more official or permanent link (the SacBee page includes dynamic coding that doesn't work with the Wayback Machine) but most other sites appear to have incomplete results missing about 20,000 votes.
