subheading - "writer"[edit]

should this subheading have a different name - incongruous with previous subheading of "music career". would it make more sense for it to be "Writing career"? Virtuososnail (talk) 03:42, 17 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Musical Style and Influences[edit]

Influenced by a wide range of films - Todd Haynes' Safe mentioned often, his film about Karen Carpenter was influential to Hval. Also inspired by The Passion of Joan of Arc, maybe worth mentioning specific vampire/b-movie films that she watched during Blood Bitch. Lots of literature as well - e.g. Fog, Carl Sandburg. Ties into her thoughts on Kate Bush, layering of vocals in an interview where she talks about reading Fog, the sounds of the poem. Also was very inspired by the book I Love Dick. Also interesting, lots about her being described as experimental, rejects the title. Describes herself as closer to pop music, although in one interview she describes how she doesn't have the mind to make pop music. Has said she likes the accessibility of pop music (interesting because it ties into the explicit nature of her lyrics.) Often compared to Laurie Anderson, Bjork, Kate Bush by writers - maybe would be good to find some different comparisons because these are just the most generic art pop female musicians - true though that they are not dissimilar. maybe need to explain why - e.g. bjork/KB = exploration of sensuality. certainly for kate bush it was more progressive at the time her lyrics. Themes[edit]

would be good to have as a separate section, or possibly to have it tie into "Style and influences." A lot of the themes of Hval's music are the same across her writing and music - female sexuality, gender, sensuality for example.
