Help appreciated.
Other : Articles on multi-sport events, less the Olympic and Paralympic Games, need to be tagged on their talk pages with {{WikiProject Multi-sport events}}.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sisyphus shows that Sisyphus might have created the games... Any info on this theory?

The first games

Solinus does not say the games were initiated in the 49th Olympiad. The Latin is: Hoc spectaculum per Cypselum tyrannum intermissum Corinthii olympiade quadragesima nona sollemnitati pristinae reddiderunt (my italics). Translated this means: 'The games which had been suspended by the tyrant Cypselus were restored to their former glory in the forty-ninth Olympiad by the Corinthians'. Favorinus, Corinthian Oration (= Dio Chrysostom, Oration #37) says that Kastor and Poludeukes (Castor and Pollux in their Latin form) competed in the inaugural games: καὶ γάρ τοι καὶ ἀγῶνα πρώτον ἐνταυθοῖ τεθήναί φασιν ὑπὸ τῶν δύο θεῶν, καὶ νικῆσαι Κάστορα μὲν στάδιον . . . πυγμὴν Πολυδεύκης – 'For they also say that the first contest was instituted there by the two gods, and Kastor won the foot-race … Poludeukes (won) in boxing'. Kastor and Poludeukes are mythical figures from a remote and mythical past (though probably with origins in the Mycenaean era), but were 'real' to the Greeks. It would have made no sense for Favorinus to say that Kastor and Poludeukes had competed in games which started in 582 BC: but it makes perfect sense if they were imagined to have competed in an inaugural event set in the remote past. The Greeks believed the games to have been inaugurated by an ancient Corinthian king, Sisyphos, or even by the Athenian hero Theseus i.e. they were immemorially old.
