I'd like to see citation on the number of casualties.

International Four Days Marches Nijmegen[edit]

I do not understand the rename action of this article by User:Ngio.

The action: changing 'International Four DayS MarchES Nijmegen' to 'International Four Day March Nijmegen'.

Pro:

  • Four Day March is a compound, so doesn't take number agreement.

Points against:

  • Official name at website of Stichting 4DAAGSE is International Four Days Marches Nijmegen.
  • Every day the participants will come back to Nijmegen and in this way we can talk about 4 seperate marchES in 4 dayS. Yes indeed you only receive a medal after completing the four days.

Dear Vincent, sorry about that, I probably did the wrong thing renaming this. If Stichting Vierdaagse calls it International Four Days Marches Nijmegen then that's what we should call it in Wikipedia, even if it isn't proper English. It's hard for us native speakers to get used to the fact that continental Euro-English isn't the same thing as we learnt at our mothers' knees. I don't however think that your argument about the four seperate marches on four days will fly: that would be the Four International Day-Marches (now I'm just being silly!). 'Vierdaagse' isn't Dutch for 'Four day's', since 'Four day's' isn't English - plurals aren't formed with an apostrophe. If anything, it's Dutch for 'Four-day', which is at least is an adjective, like 'Vierdaagse', and could likewise be used as a noun ('he took part in the 90th Four-Day'). And I don't agree that we should simply accept whatever mangled English the Dutch make up without bothering to have it checked by a native speaker - all this does is allow incorrect English to proliferate on Wikipedia. At the very least the article should mention that the title is incorrect. I personally always refer to it as the 'Four-day walking event', since it doesn't even involve marching (which is solely military, whereas most participants are civilian), but walking.188.230.248.85 (talk) 13:05, 30 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I changed the translation into "four day march". "Vierdaagse" is a noun, not an adjective (that's "vierdaags"). I kept "march" because I don't think that marching is solely military. Wimvdam (talk) 20:33, 5 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Contradiction: Number of military participants? Largest event in the world?[edit]

This article contains contradicting statements about the number of military participants: "a few thousand military participants" in the first section, "about 5,000 Military" in the section Summary, and "In recent years the military participants have numbered approximately ten thousand." in the section Vierdaagsefeesten. This should be cleaned up and replaced with one or more concrete dates and numbers, it's confusing. Also there is the claim that this event is the "largest marching event in the world" (top section). This seems to contradict with information from the article Walking#A leisure activity which lists two other events in the USA which seem to have more participants (50000 and 60000).
