Terminology of article name[edit]

A note for other editors: This article originated as a split from a General Roman Calendar section called "Congregational calendars," but I named this article "Institutional and societal calendars" because this is the accurate terminology. The 1983 Code of Canon Law, Book II, Part III is entitled "Institutes of consecrated life and societies of apostolic life," and the corresponding Vatican dicastery is called the Congregation for Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life. The content of this article deals with both types: "institutes" and "societies." It's inaccurate to refer to them all as "congregations," since "religious congregation" is actually a subset of "religious institute" which in turn is a subset of "institute of consecrated life." I understand that there may be a desire to find a word that encompasses both "institutes" and "societies" but, in the terminology used by the Catholic Church, there isn't one (hence the verbose name of that dicastery!). Most other words that one might consider for this purpose have technical meanings in this context and thus aren't appropriate either. Hopefully the Church eventually comes up with a single word to describe both, at which point of course we can and should adopt it. Jdcompguy (talk) 20:54, 8 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]
