Renaming Dan Ikuma as Ikuma Dan[edit]

I am disappointed to see that this article has been moved/Americanized from Dan Ikuma to Ikuma Dan. Can someone explain why this was done? - Kleinzach 13:35, 14 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

It hasn't been moved or Americanized. The opening sentence has been altered to be in accordance with the Manual of Style for Japanese articles (See WP:MOS-JA#Names) and with the article title. The standard Wikipedia format for modern Japanese names is given name + family name; the Kanji and transliteration show the Japanese order of family name + given name. Dan Ikuma also automatically redirects to this page, so both versions are covered. Seann 15:44, 14 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Well in that case, the style is an American one which I certainly deplore. I am surprised because WP does not usually support American usage against British. This must be an exception. (Are Chinese and Korean names also treated in this way?) Obviously I can't object to the naming of this particular page, and I take your point about the redirects, of course. Thanks for the information, I will see if I can lodge a protest! - Kleinzach 16:31, 14 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
It's not a question of American versus British -- it's about what is considered standard usage for an encyclopedia. For what it's worth, the decisions about this sort of thing tend to go through a very, very exhaustive process of debate before becoming part of the Manual of Style -- just have a look (on the talk page) at the macron/non-macron debate (still ongoing), or Hepburn transliteration versus Wapuro, Kana spelling etc. etc. But you're more than welcome to contribute on the talk page. BTW, Chinese and Korean names have their own guidelines. Seann 16:41, 14 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I have now left a note on WP:MOS-JA#Names. - Kleinzach 16:54, 14 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Perhaps I am too late to ask, however what about his grandfather's article Dan Takuma, should that be changed into Takuma Dan? and is the article name of Ikuma's uncle fine? (Katsuma Dan) | Thanks - RandomEditorAAA (talk) 23:35, 20 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
