General, or Field Marshal?[edit]

This is around the time when Monty makes Marshal, so he is definitively still a General in the film?

He was promoted Field Marshal in September 1944 (as a consolation prize for having to report to the less-experienced Eisenhower). So in the run-up to D-Day, he was still a General. Valetude (talk) 11:18, 2 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Playing both parts?[edit]

He doesn't actually play Monty in the film. He is only seen on the steps of Monty's caravan in advance of meeting him. Valetude (talk) 14:44, 3 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I agree with Valetude's observation. However, whilst watching the film (broadcast in the UK yesterday) I noted that the opening credits state "..as himself" but the closing credits state "..as himself and General Montgomery". Seems that this may be the source of the confusion. John M Brear (talk) 10:33, 9 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, Clifton James acts himself impersonating Monty, but does not actually play the part of Monty, as Monty does not feature in the film. So the closing credit is incorrect. Valetude (talk) 23:07, 5 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

In Popular Culture[edit]

These uncited statements do not appear significant enough to retain. Just ephemeral plays on a recent film, not something lasting. Chemical Engineer (talk)
