Doyen[edit]

It has been a remarkable career, just to show the enormous clout he has had despite not being a big budget production house here is a list of the actors and stars he has directed- almost a who's who of Indian Cinema. Leading actors Dilip Kumar, Raj Kapoor, Dev Anand, Guru Dutt, Sunil Dutt, Ashok Kumar, Dharmendra (6) Rajesh Khanna(4) Amitabh Bachchan(7) Sunil Dutt, Amol Palekar, Vinod Mehra, Biswajeet, Sanjeev Kumar, Navin Nischol, Shatrughan Sinha, Rakesh Roshan, Kamal Hassan, Farooq Shaikh, Raj Babbar, Anil Kapoor, Leading ladies Suchitra Sen, Nutan, Meena Kumari, Nanda, Sadhana, Saira Banu, Mala Sinha, Padmini, Sharmila Tagore (3), Jaya Bachchan(4), Rekha, Leela Naidu, Tanuja, Mumtaz, Zeenat Aman, Rakhee, Bindiya Goswami, Parveen Babi, Rajshri, Aparna Sen, Swarup Sampat, Sridevi, Deepti Naval, Anita Raj, Juhi Chawla, This does not take into account the technicians and behind the scenes players as well as the character artists he worked with. Most charachter artists owe their best roles to him ( Lalita Pawar in Anari and Mem didi, David for Mem Didi, Utpal Dutt for Guddi and Gol Maal, Om Prakash for Budha Mil Gaya and Chupke Chupe.

The Wiki entry mentions that his movies had music mainly by Sachin Dev Burman. SD Burman composed for some of his movies like Abhimaan and Mili, but there have been other composers with whom he did more work like: Salil Choudhary - Anand, Chhaya RD Burman - This must be the composer with the maximum movies - 12

Another error - Sadma was only presented by hima and NC Sippy. The director was Balu Mahendra who had directed the Tamil original

Hindi or Bengali?[edit]

His name suggests he was of Bengali origin. Was he a Bengali director of Hindi films, or a Hindi director of Hindi films? Or a Hindi director of Bollywood films? --Peripatetic 07:17, 29 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

He was indeed of Bengali origin. So yes, he was in a sense a Bengali director of Hindi films. Many of his films are in fact based on short stories by Bengali authors (Bemisal, Golmaal, Chupke Chupke etc). I also noticed in the trivia section the claim that the protagonist in 'Bawarchi' is based on Mukherjee's father. Actually, the film is a Hindi remake of the Bengali film 'Galpo Holeo Shotti'(1969) by well-known director Tapan Sinha.

The fact that the protagonist in "Bawarchi" is based on putibaba's father is in fact true. I didn't know this was made public though... Source: first hand. Abhishek.mukher.g (talk) 22:18, 23 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Skeleton infobox removal[edit]
