I think we need to tie some of these elements together - if the house was the centrepiece of a 'conceal and reveal' experience as Wetman suggests, a site plan or visit would be good - Jasper needs to sort this I think as she's been there. Gosh, you have been busy, the both of you! I don't think it's a 'conceal and reveal' experience as the house is on a sort of bluff looking down to the river and beyond - very much a 'looking out' view. I'll email you the only info I picked up, JC, which has a sketch plan (not to scale, and with a horrible looking coffee stain. Sorry!). I've added hachures to indicate the slope. I couldn't find out if there is a 'big house' nearby of which this was originally a part of the estate of (?grammar), or if it was a self-contained mini-estate. Oh, and the grotto isn't cute on the inside - plain square plan, no decoration, no reclining Neptunes - it's like a glorified brick and flint privy, bat poo and all. Most disappointing. There's no mystery, nothing like the fab grotty at Wardour Castle for eg. Oh, and shall we release ths into the big wide Wiki world? Jasper33 (talk) 14:05, 18 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

We also need to expore the Pitt-Rivers family (who I thought came from my part of the world, no, not that part, the other part, Dorset, but it seems they also have this estate] in Wiltshire. I would imagine it just was a fishing lodge/small sporting estate where they were able to live "a la rustique" - Conveniently, they also connected with Bramham Park, from which I still have all the references, I'll see what I can research up. I had wondered about that - as Pitt-Rivers suggests that the Pitt Rivers name didn't come into existence until 1880, who was Houghton Lodge built for? The Lane Fox family perhaps? Jasper33 (talk) 15:31, 18 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
