Scotland[edit]

Coming from the article about the Orkney isles, I was directed to this disambiguation page. It didn't really explain why small islands in (at least) norther Scotland are referred to as Holms. Perhaps a page on that aspect of the word should be added? My (unverified) guess is that etymologically it traces back to the old Norse word that lead to the modern Swedish word "Holme" meaning a small island, the same word that is the ending of Stockholm. Only my €0.02. --Atexit 14:10, 12 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

My Dad said the name Holmstedt meant 'stockade Island'. We were either placed on the island for stealing horses from the king, or given the island by stealing horses for the king. --Holmstedt 18:10, 11 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Handling of Orkney and Shetland holms[edit]

I had a long discussion at User talk:Ben MacDui#Holm, with that page's user, and i was surprised to realize that that hadn't resulted in this page staying compliant to MoSDab, despite the useful creation (IIRC at my suggestion) of Holm (island).

  1. Piped links only when the lk is to a specific section of the page lk'd.
  2. Only one blue lk per entry.
  3. Dabs exist (despite slightly wider usefulness) to serve (to focus on this specific Dab) users who are looking for an article that they think might be titled "Holm". It is hard to draw a line between, on one hand, Muhammad and Jesus (titles of their bios), Hegel, Goethe, Cervantes, Shakespeare, and Mohammed (who "own" those respective Rdrs, despite longer or differently spelled titles on their bios), and, on the other, "Holm", which (tho profoundly ambiguous among persons in the absence of context) is likely to be used to refer to Celeste, Ian, or Eleanor (and many more) in specific contexts that are nevertheless insufficient for some readers or listeners. So we list, on the Holm Dab, people with Holm as their surnames (but not Holm O. Bursum). With similar logic, there are contexts where islets not named simply "Holm" are likely to be referred to as "the holm"; some of these have "Holm" (or "-holm") as part of their names, and Holm (island) is a decent way of helping them find any article specific to the island in question. (Links to articles like List of Shetland islands are a disservice to Dab users, and not acceptable.)
