Alternative name[edit]

user:Ушкуйник, while I do not disagree in principle with the current opening to the article, I believe user Dmytro91 has a point in claiming that Glukhov is no longer an "alternative" spelling so much as a transliteration from Russian that is losing favour as the preferred spelling. The pronunciation "Glukhov" is still present in the research literature about the city, in media [1], [2], [3] and on the maps [4], [5]. More over it even predominates in the region. I agree with the use in historical literature, but I'm not sure I agree with the links you provide - one is in German, which I take to be irrelevant here (I believe alternative refers to an alternative name in English), one is old (2009 - English usage of Ukrainian spelling spiked after 2014) and another mentions it as a historical name but also specifically point outs that the modern name is Hlukhiv. I have no qualms about keeping Glukhov, it is the name I've encountered most often in academic literature after all (it makes sense in my field) but I also believe a different wording could reflect that while not annoying anyone. If you need to find a source that was written after the Maidan in Ukraine, then please open the book "To get Ukraine" "glukhov"+Ukraine&pg=PT38&printsec=frontcover [1]. Even in this study, the spelling Glukhov is still present, although the book was written from a purely pro-Ukrainian perspective. And again: one can speculate a lot about the language in Ukraine, but in the city of Khlukhiv the pronunciation Glukhov is still in use and it's not just a rudiment of the Soviet era. My point has less to do with language in Ukraine, which is a very tricky subject in itself, and more to do with the way places are rendered in the English language - the book you link also has Kiev as the preferred spelling and I'm assuming the translator went for the more prevalent names before 2014 in his translation (which was done immediately after Maidan as far as I could tell, book came out in 2014, translation came out in 2015). I'll repeat that I'm all for keeping Glukhov in bold in the opening as at this point in time it's still relevant, but I also believe we could formulate that first sentence in a way that reflects current attitudes to the use of Ukrainian or Russian placenames in English and doesn't mess with anyone's sensibilities.
