Competition timeline[edit]

I am going to scrap the Competition timeline section due to a lack of sourcing and errors. checking 1907–08 Football League the finishing position should be 13th, but the timeline says 3rd. checking 1908–09 Football League the finishing position should be 11th, but the timeline says 2nd, etc. feel free to add it back with sources. Gordon Durie.[edit]

The chronology of the article implies that Gordon Durie arrived at Chelsea after they were relegated in 1988 and his partnership with Dixon helped them regain their 1st Division status. Durie was signed in 1986 and replaced David Speedie in the side long before Chelsea suffered a post Christmas collapse in the 1987/88 season. The most significant transfers during this period were Dave Beasant replacing Kevin Hitchcock who was largely held to blame for Chelsea's relegation. Ken Monkou (replacing Colin Pates) Peter Nicholas (replacing Mickey Hazard) Graham Roberts (replacing Darren Wood) The highest profile deparure after relegation was Pat Nevin with Kevin Mcallister moving up the pecking order. 86.165.185.201 (talk) 19:25, 11 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I'd like to attempt a rewrite of the section concerning the period 1985 - 1990 I will put it here rather than risking vandalizing the main article.

As Chelsea consolidated their postion in the 1st division, Hollins was able to break the long standing record transfer fee set in 1974, to bring Mickey Hazard from Spurs for £300,000 in May 1985. Rather than providing more depth to the squad this created conflict with Nigel Spackman who was frequently played out of position on the left of midfield. In July 1986 Chelsea again paid a record fee of £445,000 to bring Gordon Durie to Stamford Bridge. This move saw David Speedie pushed out of an automatic 1st team place and both Speedie and Spackman were transfered at their own request. Hollins then invested in defence, most notably in the full backs Steve Clarke who would remain at Chelsea for many years and Tony Dorigo, who was on the verge of breaking into the England team. It was with great misfortune that Goalkeeper Eddie Niedzwiecki suffered a career ending injury at the end of October 1987. Chelsea's record in the first 3 months of the season was 8 wins 5 defeats and 1 draw with 16 goals conceeded in 14 games. Without a suitable replacement, the team went into freefall going 21 games before their single win during the rest of the season. Hollins was sacked and replaced by Bobby Cambell With 14 draws and 11 defeats Chelsea were uniquely forced into a play off competition with the other qualifiers coming from the 2nd division. Chelsea eventually lost to Middlseborough and the subsequent crowd trouble saw a review of the play off system involving a potential relgation candidate.

In the 2nd Division Cambell shrewdly reorganized his squad. First selling the popular Pat Nevin and signing Welsh international Peter Nicholas to play in deep midfield and the experienced Graham Roberts in central defence. In mid season he was then able to sell former captain Colin Pates to Spurs and use the money raised towards bringing Dave Beasant to the club as the solution to their ongoing goalkeeping crisis. With Beasant between the sticks the situation was reversed. With 17 wins, 4 draws and 1 defeat in the remainder of the season, Chelsea were promoted back to the top division as Champions. In their 1st season back in the top flight Chelsea finished a creditable 5th while only investing modestly in the team, but despite spending on million plus signings Denis Wise and Andy Townsend, the team slumped back to a mid table 11th the following season and Cambell was sacked in May 1991. 86.165.179.136 (talk) 11:42, 13 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
