Titel -> Hen Semi[edit]

This series is called "Hen Semi". That's how it's spelled in the official homepage's URL: http://kc.kodansha.co.jp/hensemi/ and they are even spelling it out in the ending animation. And since it's just an abbreviation of "Seminar", I suppose the wiki guidelines also point to the spelling "Semi"? ("For transliterations from katakana, use the English spelling if available (i.e., Thunderbird (サンダーバード Sandābādo) instead of Sandābādo.") Minikui (talk) 07:27, 20 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

First, Google's language tools transliterates ゼ to Ze instead of Se and gives "Zero" as the full translation. Even if the title is a portmanteau of Abnormal (Hentai) and Seminar, that doesn't means that the sounds won't change. On example is when "complex" is used in a portmanteau, which gets shortened to "con". Of course, your mileage may very with the language tools, but I find it reasonably accurate for transliterations. Second, WP:USEENGLISH states that article's names should be the one that is most commonly used by reliable sources. So far, only Anime News Network (ANN) has covered the pre-season news about the coming season, though that will change next month as Mania.com will also review the early anime episodes. ANN has been bouncing back and forth between "Hen Zemi" and "Abnormal Physiology Seminar Manga" as the main title while giving the other as an alternative.[1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8] So the real issue isn't whether the article's name should be "Hen Zemi" vs. "Hen Semi" but "Hen Zemi" vs. "Abnormal Physiology Seminar". —Farix (t | c) 11:20, 21 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
No, that's not my point anyway. I'm only talking about how the japanese title should be spelled (whether that one is the main title or not, I personally don't care). The official homepage uses "Hen Semi". The Ending theme of the OVA even spells it out for you while singing: "H E N S E M I". Of course the Katakana are "Zemi", simply because "Seminar" is spelt "Zeminaru" in Katakana. Yes, that is a matter of pronunciation (when importing the foreign one into Japanese), but the pronunciation doesn't change between the full word and the abbreviation and I see no reason for it to change in the spelling if it's the first letter. And anyway, we don't need to make up our own transliteration, when an official one already exists. Minikui (talk) 06:53, 22 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
