Criticism[edit]

The german Wikipedia lists some quite strong negative points about hamster balls: de:Joggingball. For example they mention that the animal might panic, not get enough air and not see obstacles ahead of time and hence run into them. NPOV issues[edit]

Dangers with Hamster Balls[edit]

TVT (de:Tierärztliche Vereinigung für Tierschutz) warn that hamster balls pose a huge risk of injury. The hamster can not free itself from the ball and can not control the speed or direction of the ball. While in a hamster ball, especially in a transparent one, they cannot meet their natural instinct to take cover. There is a high risk for injury when the ball hits a wall or rolls down from raised surfaces. The small ventilation slots do not give a sufficient air supply for the hamster. I have rephrased this so that it is clear this is TVT's opinion. Such things should not be expressed as fact in Wikipedia's narrative voice.

Furthermore, TVT is flat-out wrong about "cannot control the speed or direction". A hamster can do this quite well, based on personal experience. A friend would let her hamster run around in a ball for a half-hour or so every evening. The hamster would run that ball all over the house, turning corners and avoiding obstacles. You could stand in its way and the hamster would skillfully veer around you. I was quite surprised when I witnessed this, because I thought hamsters had poor eyesight (especially inside a plastic ball). ~Anachronist (talk) 05:00, 7 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Rodent eradication[edit]

Must happen as quickly as humanly possible. Eradication is the first and foremost command. Trapping and domesticating them unwillingly undoes what the pied piper was of vocation leisurely with.
