Hoax subsection

I removed this from the article: "The Half Moon Bay School District made headlines in recent months when it outlawed the assigning of homework so as not to offend children who happened to be homeless. [citation needed]" There is no school district with that name. Also, I went to school in the city until June, and teachers still assigned homework, and called it homework. So unless someone can find a source for this, I'd suggest keeping it out of the article. Clarinetplayer ^{(sing along)} 23:31, 20 August 2006 (UTC)

Beachwood

I added a link to http://71miles.com/destinations/half-moon-bay in the External Links section and called it "Hotels, restaurants, and activities" I believe the link is truly useful to Wikipedia users who want to learn more about this entry. 71Miles' writers have been published by publications like The New York Times and have written dozens of Lonely Planet books. I then received this note from another Wikipedia user who I assume removed the link:

You should not repost the links to your business, since doing so is a violation of several WP policies and guidelines. Go back to your talk page and read the next warning that was posted and the links that it will lead you to. Your site is pretty interesting compared to some others, but the project does not accept commercial links like these when they are posted to multiple articles, especially by somebody with a business interest. Generally, links to chambers of commerce or convention and visitor bureaus are acceptable in the article that they most closely tie to, while links to business sites with widespread coverage are not. The only way that links to your site would be likely to be durable would be if they did not contain many advertisements, if they contained significant, unique factual information, and if they were posted to locality articles where there was no non-profit or local equivalent, which seems unlikely. Even then, it would ahve to be a user other than you or an employee. There is a related Wikitravel project that you may want to look at.--Hjal 05:11, 4 July 2007 (UTC)

The Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Bureau pages are hardly "non-profit." Business must pay to belong. Some independent business choose not to pay the fees required, which can be hundreds of dollars. We favor small, independently owned businesses in our editorial, and do not require fees for links. There is even a link up for private realtor in the External Links section, which has no apparently value whatsoever. (Asruge 21:10, 4 July 2007 (UTC))

Infobox photo

@Viriditas I agree that the previous infobox photo was not great, but it did have the advantage that it actually depicted the town of Half Moon Bay. The new photo is shot from several miles north of the town; the town itself is pretty much invisible, hidden in the haze in the extreme upper left corner of the photo. The residential area in the lower part of the photo is the town of Moss Beach. The most prominent feature of the photo is the HMB airport, which is several miles north of HMB itself.

I've looked through the images on Commons but don't see a really great one. I will try to take a better photo when I can, but for now I think the previous image, of downtown Main Street, is better than the new photo, which doesn't depict what it claims to depict. Or perhaps this one, another shot of Main Street, although it's a pretty limited view. CodeTalker (talk) 23:31, 23 September 2023 (UTC)

Yeah, I agree. I will find another one. I still don't think the original photo should return, but I will compromise and look for another one. The majority of the composition of the last photo was pavement and cars. Not very illustrative of the town. Also, I'm not convinced that showing the downtown area is the best use of the image. Half Moon Bay is famous for many things, least of all its downtown, parking, and cars. Nature should be the top priority. Viriditas (talk) 23:45, 23 September 2023 (UTC)
