Awkward phrasing[edit]

@MSGJ: In regards to your recent revert on Haig Point Range Lights, I just wanted to reference a couple of items:

Could we further discuss the potential 'subjectiveness'? It reads fine to me, and brings the article in-line with the above guidance.

Thanks! CaptainAngus (talk) 13:16, 2 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hi CaptainAngus. Staffing a lighthouse does not seem appropriate to me, perhaps due to the nature the job. It would be similarly awkward to talk about staffing a ship. Furthermore I do not go along with the gender-neutral argument, especially as lighthouse keeping is very much an historical occupation. The discussion that I saw on this was purely referring to space flights and not other articles. I will check the other discussion you referenced above, but perhaps more opinions should be sought before changing this on a mass scale? Regards — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 16:28, 2 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@MSGJ: Hi, sorry for the delay here, the other conversation took a slightly different course. In this case, I would still advocate for 'staffing', because I think it fits the bill and it seems to be in use across other articles on lighthouses. However, I'm up for other terms as well. Some alternatives I'd like to suggest:
  • This light was kept until about 1924.
  • This light was tended until about 1924.
  • This lighthouse kept a duty staff until about 1924.
You cite lighthouse keeping as a historical occupation, but I don't follow the argument. The duties are not gender specific, and my goal in this edit to reflect that. The lighthouse just needs a 'person' there to run it, not a man.
Please let me know what you think about my suggested alternatives, or if you have any other ideas! CaptainAngus (talk) 00:17, 5 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
