Praise and Dissent[edit]

Any reference or source for the said "Praise" and "Dissent" about "Topos of Music" ? Tymoczko has expressed his skepticism about the counterpoint approach of ToM, but that would induce the reader into thinking that he is skeptical of ToM as whole ? Unless this is backed up by a specific source I don't see why this article should affirm that. The same goes for the "Praise" part. Does there exit any reference or source that Grothendieck has approved of ToM ? Does there exist any reference or source that Manin has approved of ToM ? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 192.109.140.137 (talk) 08:30, 5 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I was able to find a source for Tymoczko's skepticism on the counterpoint approach of ToM. I did not touch the formulation on this point, but I agree that perhaps more sources should be added or the formulation reworded. However I could not find any source for the praise by prominent mathematicians, and as the above contribution to the discussion page is already nearly 5 years old, I removed them, and added citation-needed-tags. What I also noted was that the passage about the praise and dissent was added here on the English Wikipedia from an IP address in Switzerland, and on the German Wikipedia from an IP address at the University of Minnesota. Note that Mazzola still has an address in Switzerland and works at the University of Minnesota (Wikipedia:Conflict of interest could be relevant, but also see Wikipedia:Assume good faith). 131.220.245.1 (talk) 17:44, 29 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Suspected conflict of interest, lack of verifiability, lack of notability[edit]

Suspected conflict of interest[edit]

Nine years ago, a contribution was made to this discussion page, pointing out the lack of evidence for the effusive praise by famous mathematicians claimed in the article (see above). In 2017, I removed the still unsubstantiated specific praise and added some citation-needed-tags to general statements in that section. I also mentioned in the discussion page that the IP addresses of the editors adding those statements could point towards a conflict of interest.

I was quite surprised to see that the article again contains unsubstantiated claims of Mazzola having been praised by famous mathematicians. Looking through the edits since my own in 2017, it now seems quite likely to me that it is mainly Mazzola, or someone else with a conflict of interest, that is behind most edits of this article. For this I went through every single edit since my own:

There were 34 edits made since my edit (see full list below). Out of that, 6 were made by bots and 28 by non-bots. Of those 28 non-bot edits, a full half, 14, were made by IPs that lead back to the University of Minnesota, which is the workplace of Mazzola. I marked those below with an asterisk. I also marked with two asterisk another two edits which come from the IP 216.160.2.253, geolocated to Minneapolis/Saint Paul, which is where the University of Minnesota is located. I also marked with three asterisks another two edits which were made by swisscom IPs during usual winter/summer break times. Note that according to this Wikipedia page, Mazzola is originally from Switzerland.

This leads me to suspect that out of the 28 edits not made by bots, 18 (so more than half!) were made by someone with a conflict of interest, possibly Mazzola himself. Of the other edits, the only two non-minor (by my judgment) edits were one edit that removed some unsubstantiated quotes praising Mazzola, and one edit that added citation-needed tags to unsubstantiated claims that prominent mathematicians praised Mazzola.

I thus suspect that on the whole, this article is mainly edited by someone with a conflict of interest.

Verifiability and notability[edit]

Large parts of the article as it is now do not have sources and are not verifiable. In fact, apart from the long lists in the bibliography and discography sections, the only information this article contains that has an independent source (i.e. Mazzola's own website does not count) is that Mazzola is a professor at the University of Minnesota, Mazzola is/was president of the "Society for Mathematics and Computation in Music", and Tymoczko's criticism of Mazzola's counterpoint theory. In particular, I think this seriously put into doubt notability, in particular this looks like a likely example of self-promotion to me.
