How do Essential Compilation albums fit into this discussion of general types of compilation albums. My iPod has The Essential Johnny Cash, The Essential Babyface, The Essential Tony Bennett [Limited Edition] and The Essential Miles Davis. I am wondering how these compare to other types of Compilation albums. Also, I have a few Ultimate Compilation Albums. Where do these types fall in? Should Ringo Starr's 'Blast from Your Past' be really worth mentioning as a premature compilation solely for the reason of it proceeding a "mere" four solo albums? That seems to be the standard these days for major label artists. User:Dbone828 15 October 2008 —Preceding undated comment was added at 04:40, 15 October 2008 (UTC).[reply]

ABBA's original (1976) Greatest Hits album consisted of songs from their first *three* albums, with one new song on some versions. Ubcule (talk) 11:11, 13 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Variants and other facts that may be worth including[edit]

Another variant of the greatest hits albums are those that cover a particular artist's career. They will usually feature recordings performed by the artist when they were part of the band that was their starting point for their musical career, then will cover solo performances and / or guest performances with other bands that they recorded after they left the original band. Examples would be "All The Best" by Paul McCartney (covering his Wings career, duets with Stevie Wonder and Michael Jackson) and some solo works; "If I Was" by Midge Ure & Ultravox which covered key songs from Ultravox, Band Aid's "Do They Know It's Christmas" and Midge Ure's solo works; and "At Worst: The Best of Boy George And Culture Club" which featured Boy George's music from his Culture Club career through some solo works and some of his guest performances.

Some of these albums will feature recordings that were commissioned for a particular film, TV show or similar audiovisual work. This may allow for situations where the audiovisual work doesn't have enough recordings to justify the creation of a soundtrack album. SimonMackay (talk) 15:29, 7 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Greatest hitsGreatest hits album — Every instance of the term "greatest hits" in the article is followed by "album" or "collection". The term is also used in {{Infobox album}}, where all other albums are "studio album" or "live album" etc. Adabow (talk · contribs) 05:47, 1 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

  • Support; the article is about the compilation, not about the hits themselves. Powers T 13:10, 1 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

  • Support:i'm pretty sure this was already posted before, but i also agree on what powers said. theres not much separating it from a compilation album.Bread Ninja (talk) 06:16, 2 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Criticism[edit]

I've removed some info on this section since there are a couple of things wrong with it. First, there are no rules as to how long an artist has had to have been releasing records for before they release a GH album, it really depends on how many hits they've had (ie - enough to make up an album). Secondly, a Greatest Hits is not the same as a Very Best of. Greatest Hits indicates that the artist has had a lot of hits, a best of indicates that this collection is the best example of their work (they need not have had ANY hits).--Tuzapicabit (talk) 13:49, 31 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Greatest Hits, Best of...,The Definitive..., and The Essential... type albums[edit]

The article really could use some more info differentiating between Greatest Hits, Best of...,The Definitive..., and The Essential... type albums. The first is generally just chart topping hits, even if not always exclusively U.S. chart toppers, with the occasional bonus track or two sometimes thrown in. Best of albums may be the equivalent of a Greatest Hits album or they may also include songs by the artist or band that where not technically hits but are considered noteworthy by the bands or singers fans. In some cases, for an artist/band with no hits, they are simply a collection songs considered noteworthy by the band's or singer's fans and/or music critics. Albums with the title The Definitive... (ex. "Definitive Monkees", Definitive Collection ("Commodores: Definitive Collection") or The Essential... (ex. Essential Michael Jackson) generally cover a broader range of the band's or singer's music, implying they have every noteworthy song of that artists/band, if not always succeeding in fan's/critic's eyes. These are different then "box sets" for a band or artists, which can be definitive collections if the artist/band has a large prolific body of work or they can be simply collections of every album, EP, and single that artist/band has ever released. Maybe we should improve the descriptions of these different types of albums and explain how the others can or do differ from a straight greatest hits album. --108.239.8.149 (talk) 18:54, 4 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
