Platform Length Accuracy[edit]

The Network Rail Rules of the Plan for the former Great Western Zone[1] gives the following operational platform lengths for Gloucester:

  • Platform 1 (North End, between signals G54 and G135) - 246 metres
  • Platform 2 (South End, between signals G58 and G133) - 248 metres
  • Platforms 1 and 2 (Combined Down, between signals G135 and G58) - 494 metres
  • Platform 3 (South Bay, inside signal G354) - 105 metres
  • Platform 4 (Up, inside signal G358) - 324 metres

So whilst the total length may be 600+ metres, the operational length is clearly much shorter and, like Cambridge, the "full" length is calculated from the length of two platforms.

For comparison, the lengths given in the Rules of the Plan for the former East Anglia Zone [2] for Cambridge and Colchester are as follows:

  • Cambridge:
    • Platform 1 (Through) - 247 metres
    • Platform 2 (South Bay) - 207 metres
    • Platform 3 (South Bay) - 166 metres
    • Platform 4 (Through) - 220 metres
    • Platform 5 (North Bay) - 167 metres
    • Platform 6 (North Bay) - 145 metres
  • Colchester:
    • Platform 1 - 251 metres
    • Platform 2 - 260 metres
    • Platform 3 - 248 metres
    • Platform 4 - 318 metres
    • Platform 5 - 220 metres
    • Platform 6 - 223 metres

South West Trains?[edit]

I saw a Class 158 in South West Trains livery at Gloucester today. Couldn't see its destination blind as I was sitting on an HST in the other platform. 137.205.171.38 (talk) 15:57, 15 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
