Notable?[edit]

  • Google search for "giftgas voicemail" (in quotes) shows that this mishearing is quite common, and causes annoyance and misunderstanding, and that information should be made publicly available to redirect people to the correct form of the company's name. (I have a friend whose mobile phone is on Giffgaff, and I made this mishearing also.) Anthony Appleyard (talk) 23:26, 19 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

delete[edit]

This page is completely unnecessary and needs to be deleted.

For starters, I see no reason to expect a topic (in this case, poison gas) to have links to it under a foreign-language name, because this is the English Wikipedia, except in specific cases where that name has become particularly notable in English-language contexts in connection with it. The most that can be said is that Germany is one of many countries that have at some point made use of poison gas in warfare; however, I certainly see no evidence that just because of this the word Giftgas has become at all recognised in English-language contexts. The word is not even mentioned in the article about chemical warfare.

Equally, regarding Giffgaff, even if it is true that the mishearing is in some sense notable (which I rather doubt but I don't completely rule out), it does not warrant its own page to say this, just a brief mention in the Giffgaff article itself. Again, there is no mention of this in the article. I suspect the reaon why not is that it would be removed from the article pretty quickly if it was added. It rather looks like someone chose to make a separate little page for this piece of trivia so that it wouldn't attract the same level of scrutiny.

Neither entry was valid, but I resolved incoming links and did a search for Giftgas in WP articles There are 3 valid entries;I removed the two which don't meet MOS:DABMENTION, MOS:DABRL or have an article. Best wishes, Boleyn (talk) 16:21, 30 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for the reply. Even though the link to Giffgaff is now relegated to a "see also" section, I am inclined to remove it entirely, because it is stretching credibility that a significant number of people would come to this page if they were in fact looking for Giffgaff; it is just not a plausible mishearing for an English-speaker. There are no doubt a great many pairs of unconnected articles that nonetheless have vaguely similar sounding titles, and to include links between such pairs should be truly exceptional or the place would be full of these links. If nobody objects within reasonable time, I will remove it.
