Misleading/erroneous Article[edit]

The current article is highly misleading. The lexicon that for the past 500 years has been conventionally titled the "Etymologicum Magnum" is NOT the same work as the "Etymologicum Genuinum", nor is it known as such in classical scholarship, as the article states and the redirect implies.

  • The so-called Etymologicum Magnum is an extensive lexical compendium produced by an unknown compilator in the mid twelfth century. It was first published in 1499 and most recently ed. Thomas Gaisford (Oxford 1848).
  • The so-called Etymologicum Genuinum was only discovered in the nineteenth century in two tenth-century manuscripts. It was compiled at Constantinople in the mid ninth century. It remains for the most part unpublished.

Both titles are of course modern conventions (in fact, in the manuscripts the two works are identically titled "Mega Etymologikon"), but the article should follow these well-established conventions and not confuse readers; i.e. currently, a reader looking for an article on the Etymologicum Magnum is unwittingly directed to an article that is actually about the Etymologicum Genuinum, and which contains a link to the "real" Etymologicum Magnum styled, bizarrely, "Etymologicon Magnum".

The confusion has been compounded by the (uncompleted) edition of the Etymologicum Genuinum by F. Lasserre and N. Livadaras (1976- ). On the grounds that the Etymologicum Genuinum was an important source for the Etymologicum Magnum, Lasserre/Livadaras chose to style the Etymologicum Genuinum the "Etymologicum Magnum Genuinum" and the Etymologicum Magnum as "Etymologicum Magnum Auctum", but these designations have been overwhelmingly avoided/ignored by subsequent scholarship, partly because they somewhat misrepresent the Etymologicum Magnum as merely an expanded version of the Etymologicum Genuinum, and partly because they cause more confusion than they resolve. Recommend rewrite/correction of current articles and redirects for "Etymologicum Magnum" and "Etymologicon Magnum". —Preceding unsigned comment added by 80.135.106.213 (talk) 19:38, 12 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
