About Mason / Mason Jr.[edit]

For whoever unedited the "Jr." addition: His father is the one called "Mason" in the movie. It isn't "nonsense". — Preceding unsigned comment added by 189.100.205.58 (talk) 13:19, 8 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

By the way...[edit]

... even in his Filmography, the character's name is "Mason Evans Jr.". His father is called Mason in the film. The full name is unambiguously right, and not long enough to make the article / entry less clear.

Primaler - the work you've done in the article is great. Denying a small correction such as this doesn't make the article justice. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 189.100.205.58 (talk) 00:40, 11 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Consensus needed: He or they?[edit]

I see a lot of edit warring at the article about whether to refer to the subject as "he" vs "they". Some editors are saying that Coltrane prefers "they," but nobody is providing evidence either way. I don't see any previous discussion here at the talk page. There needs to be. If we can establish a clear consensus, here at the talk page, then we can enforce it at the article if necessary. Most online references to the subject say "he," but we need not be guided by online usage if the person has made a clear and consistent statement of preference. -- MelanieN (talk) 21:27, 24 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

P.S. The vast majority of the recent editing is being done by IPs (hence unpingable). @Bmf 051, Serols, Mstallone, and Ponyo: can you contribute anything here? -- MelanieN (talk) 21:33, 24 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
(ec) @MelanieN: was going to semi it due to to an RFPP request, but I'll leave this to you if you'll be around. FYI to those discussing, please consider our manual of style on gender identity (MOS:IDENTITY) and how it might apply to this article. --slakrtalk / 21:39, 24 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@MelanieN: When I last edited the article there was a primary source (Coltrane's verified Instagram account) included in the article that verified the they/them preference, so the "self-identification" requirement was met.-- Jezebel's Ponyobons mots 21:45, 24 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I see the reference for self-identification was removed by an IP a couple of weeks ago without explanation. Perhaps pending changes will help?-- Jezebel's Ponyobons mots 21:50, 24 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
(ec) Thanks, Ponyo, that's the kind of thing I was hoping someone would have. Do you think that one Instagram link is definitive enough? They don't seem to bring up the "they" preference to interviewers or at IMDB. But if we think it is clear enough, I'd suggest we link to it in the article (for instance in a footnote to the first use). Are you willing to do that? And then having established the "right" version we could semi-protect. Normally I wouldn't semi-protect since the changes are kind of spread out in time, but this is a BLP issue. And I don't think the article has enough page-watchers for PC to work well. -- MelanieN (talk) 21:57, 24 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
With gender ID (as well as WP:EGRS information) I think self-disclosing your preference on your verified front-facing media accounts (whether it be Instagram, Facebook or a personal website) is a pretty strong statement. IMDb bios include material dreamed up by the whoever feels like posting, so the inclusion or exclusion of such information there is not really relevant. Let me dig around a bit and see what I can find, otherwise I will try to link it as you suggest.-- Jezebel's Ponyobons mots 22:06, 24 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I see that you have linked it. Thanks. Go ahead and look, but I am going to semi-protect the article now. -- MelanieN (talk) 22:08, 24 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
For future reference, there is also this quote from New York: "I think defined gender roles are bullshit"[1]-- Jezebel's Ponyobons mots 22:27, 24 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
It is worth noting that a pronoun preference need not be the same thing as a gender identification. It can be a political position. The quotation you offer suggests that in Coltrane's case it is the latter. Coltrane is not saying "I do not identify as male" but is objecting to the idea of anyone identifying as male or female. 47.54.108.74 (talk) 17:11, 26 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
PS - I just noticed that Coltrane is listed in four categories that have "male" in their descriptions. I leave it to others to decide if these should be changed. 47.54.108.74 (talk) 17:21, 26 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

As Coltrane make clear on their Instagram profile, their pronouns are they/them. Per MOS:GENDERID this is reflected in the article, and highlighted by use of the {{Article pronouns}} banner in the Talk header. Mathglot (talk) 20:24, 1 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Pronouns reprise[edit]

As Ellar Coltrane's Instagram profile no longer shows they/them, and other sources in the article refer to Coltrane as "he", I have changed the pronouns in the article accordingly. ... discospinster talk 02:36, 28 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
