Genre[edit]

Penrose is in an integral part of an influential genre of Pittsburgh writers of science fiction, fantasy and the macabre, that has led to a partuclar "Pittsburgh Style" that is shaped by and influence by the major players in this genre. See also Barton Paul Levenson and Kenneth Chiacchia. Pittsburgh is well-documented for this genre for over 50 years, starting with George Romero's influence, Bill Cardille's Chiller Theatre, Rusty Cundieff, Tom Savini, Michael Chabon, Mark Menold's "It's Alive" show and the annual "Zombiefest" and even the Anthrocon which has found a home in the City. Films such as Silence of the Lambs and King's The Dark Half have been filmed there.

Penrose is an anchor of the Worldwrights workshop that originated at Carnegie-Mellon University under the tutelage of Mary Soon Lee. The Worldwrights are the oldest and most published of three major Pittsburgh writer's workshops of this genre and the total number of publications of the group is in the hundreds. Pittsburgh also hosts the annual Confluence Science Fiction and Fantasy convention of which the Worldwrights are frequent participants and honorees.

Penrose is most prominent among the Worldwrights as a poet of this "Pittsbugh" genre, rather than as a writer of novels or short stories.

Would I be out of line in asking for stub status? as I am still tracking down other published poems of hers for which I need valid cites. My intention is to continue creating Wikipedia articles on the major players in the "Pittsburgh Style", much like my work on Female Writers from New York in the "Americana" Style, see my articles on Laruen Groff (See Delicate Edible Birds), Marly Youmans (See Cooperstown, New York) and Phyllis Shalant.
