Too many stereotypes[edit]

For the sake of the real world PMERJ and BOPE, since the book in which the movie is based is partly-fictional (and, perhaps, with a lot of stereotypes regardind police brutality and procedures), I cleaned the synopsis and give it a better clean-looking face. --Officer Boscorelli (talk) 14:40, 17 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Anderson Silva's quote[edit]

On Oct. 24th, I added a paragraph to this article where Anderson Silva quoted a line from "Tropa de Elite" in talking about his recent UFC victory. I'd like to know why the paragraph was removed. It was important that a Brazilian film (largely unknown to American audiences) was referenced in an American event which was seen by millions all over the world. Anderson's reference had no political connotations with respect to the United States, so it couldn't be seen as inflammatory. Unless I'm just missing something, it seems stupid to remove the paragraph.

There are two guidelines/policies your contribution runs into conflict with. Wikipedia is not an indiscriminate collection of information, and I have to say this piece of information is rather trivial. In the case of trivia or other information that would fit those "In popular culture" sections, WP:TRIVIA provides a guideline for inclusion which I don't think the article meets right now, at least not at the current depth it is at. Once people start developing on the cultural impact of the movie, we can start mentioning individual examples of celebrities quoting the movie or whatever else it may be. So, in a nutshell, it's a standalone fact which is trivial, but that may change once people expand the article to talk about the social impact of the movie.--Dali-Llama 18:23, 25 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Television rights dispute[edit]

I'd like to know if is it really necessary to keep the whole "television rights" section. I believe the only thing there that has any sort of relevance is the bit about Rede Globo winning a dispute with other brazilian TV stations over the production of a series based on the film (under the direction of José Padilha). Can't we just delete the unimportant stuff? Who really cares about distribution rights to broadcast the film in Brazil, untrue rumors and that "RedeTV! is offering about 7.5 million dollars" for the series (dated information)? Just wondering if those are "wiki-worthy" material... HolyLand (talk) 18:54, 28 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Personally, I think it's irrelevant. Go ahead and remove it.--Dali-Llama (talk) 21:41, 28 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

the screenplay proceeded the book[edit]

I just watched the DVD, and in the director interview (in the bonus section), José Padilha says that the book was actually based on the early version of the screenplay and the research that he did to put together the screenplay. Several websites, though, say that the book, which was released in 2006, is what the film (2007) was based on, but from the DVD commentary it seemed clear that the story is more complicated and that the film (at least as a basic screenplay) proceeded the book. For documentation of this point, you can see this quote: "Padilha afirma que o filme não é uma adaptação do livro. 'O roteiro já estava pronto quando mostramos ao Luis Eduardo. Só que é mais fácil lançar um livro do que fazer um filme', brinca." Movie Name Translation[edit]

I would suggest that: The Elite Squad is an inaccurate title for the movie. Anyone with basic Brazilian Portuguese know that a direct translation would be "Elite Squad" instead of "The Elite Squad". I'm not trying to ruffle feathers just want to have a correct translation across the board. I would cite IMDB's naming convention: "Elite Squad" http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0861739/ And the official website for the movie uses "Elite Squad" as well. (Although this is a website for the sequel to "Tropa de Elite") http://elitesquad-movie.com/ In short I would suggest a name and page change for this film to "Elite Squad" as well as a name and page change for "Elite Squad - The Enemy Within"

Wikipedia should not be in the business of "translating" titles unless it is specially noted like this: (literally, English translation).
WP should be reporting what a film's English language release title is, and that is normally the case.
There is often no connection between the original title, the US title and the UK title.
In this case, the US Weinstein DVD (2008) is called just Elite Squad.
So the question is, is there an English-speaking territory where it was released as The Elite Squad?
If not, there is an error here. Varlaam (talk) 18:27, 8 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Its festival title was The Elite Squad, and its theatrical and DVD title was Elite Squad. Title fixed. Film Fan (talk) 10:52, 3 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Budget R$11 million / US$6,537,890.04[edit]

That, presumably, is a currency conversion. If so, it should be indicated as such, and footnoted to indicate when the conversion was made. The exchange rate from when?
Budget R$11 million (US$6,537,890.04)
It could be formatted like that.
As for 4 cents, that adds 2 significant digits, so eliminate the pennies.
