Problems I See[edit]

I see many problems with this article.

It doesn't have a lead section.
It's mostly unreferenced.
The only article that links here is industrial design.
It's uncategorized.
It's mostly redundant with the information in electric guitar#history.
The bulk of the information was written by one editor.
The list at the bottom is possibly a way to prevent orphanage of other articles.

Given these problems, I propose the article be scrapped and whatever unique, verifiable information (which may be nothing) be salvaged and merged into electric guitar, Fender Musical Instruments Corporation, or other appropriate articles. — Ultor_Solis • T 21:57, 2 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Ghastly article -- deletion might be too good for it. Trying to take on a big topic with enthusiasm and a severe lack of actual knowledge. Overwhelmed bythe grandiosity, beginning (literally) with Electric guitar design is a type of industrial design and winding tragically downhill.

Augh, another ugly puppy I have to put on my rescue list. Please, someone, take it away...

Upon re-review, and seeing that nobody's stood up in defense, I support removing this article entirely. It adds to no discussion, and it resembles nothing more than a failed term paper. Until that happy day, I am going to remove some of the more septic portions.

In good faith, I have taken a few swings at reworking this article, but I do not know that it can be salvaged. In any case, I do not see that I am suited to the task, and may instead simply recommend it for deletion.

If it is going to persist, it MUST show some effort at attempting an overview or summary of the underlying philosophy and motivation of, well, electric guitar design. Off the top of my head, a few suggestions: Les Paul, Leo Fender, Doc Kauffman, Seth Lover, Paul Bigsby, Trev Wilkinson, Paul Reed Smith, Ken Parker, Grover Jackson. Plenty has been written about them all.

claims about "the first"[edit]

To reiterate my comments at Talk:Electric guitar:

per WP, An electric guitar is a fretted stringed instrument with a neck and body
- a lap steel has neither functional frets nor a neck
- therefore, a pickup DOES NOT make a lap steel an "electric guitar"
and an acoustic guitar with a stuck-on contact microphone IS NOT an "electric guitar"
if there is a "first," it is most likely the Electro-Spanish Ken Roberts
- but seeing as less than 50 total quantity were produced & sold between 1931-1937, a better criterion would likely be "first commercially successful electic guitar

Give it a thought.
