Is he the 1st or 2nd Duke of Somerset?[edit]

The son of John Baufort, 1st Earl of Somerset, with the same name John Beaufort is said to be the 1st Duke of Somerset (see there).

So why Edmund should be the 1st? The page "Edmund Beaufort, 2nd Duke of Somerset" ist redirected to "Edmund Beaufort, 1st Duke of Somerset". Is that correct?

The title Duke of Somerset was created twice, in 1443 and 1448 (as well as some other times). Each time the title is created/recreated, the numbering starts again from one.Richard75 18:57, 8 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Despite the fact that this title was created twice in five years, I have moved the article back to Edmund Beaufort, 2nd Duke of Somerset because both of his successors are listed by the numbers "3rd" and "4th" suggesting that Edmund is the 2nd Duke. Most histories I have read about the family note him as the second duke, even if the DNB names him the first duke. His title was granted as a successor of his brother's title and thus he should be the 2nd duke of Somerset. If you disagree, then you must also move the two other dukes Henry Beaufort, 3rd Duke of Somerset and Edmund Beaufort, 4th Duke of Somerset as they are a part of the same second creation. Cheers.

Thomas Beaufort?[edit]

Do we know anything about Edmund's son Thomas? He is listed in this article b 1442 d 1517 and Weir's Genealogy is cited, but Weir's listing gives no birth date and says he died young before 1463. In the article under Edmund Beaufort, 4th Duke of Somerset, Pollard is quoted 'His [Edmund, 4th Duke] younger brother John had been killed during the battle, and as both died unmarried, "the house of Beaufort and all the honours to which they were entitled became extinct",' which also implies Thomas died before his brothers Edmund and John in 1471.

So do we correct Thomas' listing in this article to remove the birth date and give the death as before 1463 per Weir? Or does anyone know where the dates 1442-1517 came from and can correct the citation? History Lunatic (talk) 08:05, 18 December 2018 (UTC)History Lunatic[reply]
