Just a couple of points which it may be felt worth adding. Strathcona won one small race as a 3yo. She was a half-sister to the Eclipse winner Canisbay. Dunfermline was her second foal, her third foal Tartan Pimpernell was a useful filly winning the Acomb Stakes and May Hill Stakes as a 2yo, and the Galtres Stakes as a 3yo (she too was a disappointing broodmare but did produce the 1992 Hunt Cup winner, Colour Sargeant). When Carson took over as stable jockey he didn't rate Dunfermline and much preferred two other fillies in the yard (Topbird owned by Beaverbrook and Circlet owned by the Queen). This is mentioned in Bill Curling's book 'All the Queens Horses'. He also mentions that Piggott was of the opinion that she was ingenuine (he rode Miss Pinkie to beat her in the Fillies Mile), while Mercer felt she was still green. Finally when the Queen's Racing Manager was asked to rate the Queen's top horses he put Dunfermline as her best horse: surprisingly ahead of Highclere and Aureole. This is from Steve Smith's book on the Royal Horses. (Victor Middlesex (talk) 07:12, 6 January 2015 (UTC))[reply]
