Untitled[edit]

On December 1, 2007, Dries[8] announced, together with co-founder Jay Batson the launch of a start-up called Acquia.[9] Acquia wants to be to Drupal what Red Hat has been to Linux.

Isn't this 2nd point an opinion and then needs a reference or otherwise? I think my question is a slight fallacy from 'or otherwise' But I'm trying to get to the bottom of this lack of reference, the 2nd sentence. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 98.173.42.82 (talk) 00:39, 24 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

"Defended" his dissertation? o.O[edit]

What the hell does that mean? I mean, was the dissertation paper in danger of being burnt by Amish people and he had to fend them off, or what? Never heard of that phrase, seriously. Please make that clearer. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 87.78.139.87 (talk) 12:57, 26 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
In most disciplines, the requirements for obtaining a doctoral degree include (1) a major written work (the PhD thesis) and (2) an oral examination, in which either the qualification of the candidate for the field as a whole or the scientific work presented in the thesis are being challenged in a typically public oral examination. If the focus of that oral examination is the content of the thesis, it is typical academic terminology to say to "defend the thesis". It is also called a "Phd viva", "PhD defense", or "Defensio dissertationis".

So the wording should be kept as it is. One may add a link there, but I think that is not needed. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 85.181.55.27 (talk) 17:36, 12 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
