Should this only detail the actual series?

Certain Dragon Ball Z movies happen in the Dragon Ball Z universe. Mostly I am referring to the character list, because at the moment I have (perhaps wrongly) added a few characters which only feature in the movies.. Should they not be listed here? I do plan to add a link to the movies. Perhaps the characters can be offloaded to those pages after they are done? Bah! Opinions please.

In my opinion, characters from the movies should only be listed on a new page for the movies. They do not take part in the manga and are not, strictly speaking, creations of Toriyama Akira - therefore IMHO they're not really DBZ characters. Yeah, offload the non-canon movie characters to some new page.

Only the two TV character specials (Trunks & Bardock) are in the canon of the series officially. Some fans consider Dead Zone (DBZ Movie 1) to be in canon because it's necessary backstory to the Garlick Jr. Saga-- but there are still some minor logical gaps. (Most of the other movies have major logical gaps-- like characters together when one of them should be dead, etc.) To be honest, I have no idea what movie you are talking about-- there are only 13 DBZ movies plus the two specials and that doesn't sound like any of them. This does bear an edit to the main article explaining the difference between the series and the movies. Also, there is a "14th" movie (actually released in two parts) which is even less canon and, amazingly, released by Bandai originally as a very bad video game: "Side Story: The Plan to Eradicate the Saiyans". [1] has the info. There are currently no plans to release that "movie" in the US (the game didn't make it here either), but who knows how desperate Funimation will get once they run out of Dragon Ball next year. Spelling of Frieza

Throughout the various articles relating to Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z, the name is spelt as either Frieza or Freeza. Can we agree on a standard? --210.246.30.39 07:58, 21 Jun 2005 (UTC)

I personally think we should go with Frieza because its the most commonly known verse and its most recognizable. If Frieza were translated to the jap versions of Freeza and Freezer or even Fureeza-Sama, then every other name would have to be translated as well. There's no point in making it Freeza on wikipedia. Theme Song Question

I've heard clips of English versions of "Cha-La Head-Cha-La" and "We Gotta Power". Where exactly were they used?

If I remember right, they were never actually used in the series but merely created for CD release in the phillipines(spelled the wrong I bet). Not entirely sure though.

They are the original opening and closing themes of the show but were replaced by "Rock the Dragon" in the first season of the US-version and by various instrumentals in other seasons.

There from the CD "Mixture" that was released in Japan. There are three song from DBZ on it that are sung in english by the original singer "Kageyama Hironobu". The song are: CHA-LA HEAD-CHA-LA, WE GOTTA POWER, & Boku-tachi wa Tenshi Datta, that's both OPs and the 2nd ED.

Particular Paragraph

"The main character of Dragonball Z, Goku, is also related to the DC Comic hero, Superman, by many. Their history of their home planet being destroyed and them being sent to a far away planet as the last of their kind, their similarities in abilities and powers, and much more. But even though their similarity is usually not argued apon, many do argue of who is more powerful between the two. It has even been talked about in Wizard issue #133 in which they state that Goku would beat the original Pre-Crisis Superman(said to be the most powerful Superman other than Superman Prime) after going only to Super Saiyan 1 level. However there were several inaccuracies in this artical, which makes it quite clear the Wizard team aren't very informed about Dragonball. These include the belief that Goku could survive unaided in space.(Which is not true.)"

This particular paragraph seems of a low quality, and possibly a low relevence. I think it needs to be one sentence, like "Goku is often compared to the DC Comic hero Superman, since they share similar backgrounds, abilities and status." Bihal 02:46, 9 August 2005 (UTC)

Contradiction?

"For example, during the Freeza Saga there is a flashback showing that Vegeta, Radditz and Nappa were already aware that Freeza destroyed their home planet long before the events in DBZ took place even though the series showed that Vegeta was not aware until Dodoria told him on Planet Namek."

Are you SURE the flashback 'shows they were aware of it' ? The only flashbacks I remember show them viewing the planet's destruction, but not actually seeing Freezer do it.

And I on my hand think the latter comment is incorrect. The television show shows Vegeta, Nappa and Radditz, after being humiliated by Furiza, discussing the possibility of Furiza being responsible for the destruction. Vegeta claims he already knew a long time and says he doesn't mind, the only thing that matters to him is beating Furiza and becoming the most powerful one. When Dodoria tells Vegeta on Namek, Vegeta laughs at him in the show, and says he already knew.Evilbu 20:51, 10 February 2006 (UTC)

Latest edits

Umm there are about 5 edits (by 70.186.33.245) that seem to be changing random bits of info, breaking and removing wiki links and hasn't added any sources. I am not familiar enough with the series to tell if these additions are true facts or not (otherwise I would just revert). I would check it out . Uncut Version section

The section Uncut Version looks like nothing but a poorly-written list of every single removed edit the writer saw. Granted, I couldn’t do much better, but could someone clean that up and make it more of a paragraph and less of a list? —Frungi 06:12, 1 December 2005 (UTC)

Uncut DVDS

Muchi, I spent alot of time researching all the DVDs and creating the list because I orignally ventured to wikipedia to discover no information about it. For you to remove all that work and claim its not needed is not very smart. Just because you dont care about the DVDs, others might. Im putting it back in. If you really dont feel it belongs here, create a new section, place the info in there, and link to it from here. Dont go erase my hours of work.

Are The DVDs Right?

I just wanted to know whether or not the list of uncut DVDs in the article is correct. The numbers of the episodes are sort of mixed up, and it is missing 277-291. Have FUNimation released the last 14 episodes uncut? And The Namek Saga of the larger Frieza Saga lasts until episode 67, not 53 doesn't it? I think you're getting confused with what version you mean. The uncut DVDs were the original episodes as they screened in Japan, and there were only 277 of those. The rest were movies and the two TV specials. The American version was longer (at 291 episodes, and the movies and TV specials) which are the edited versions + what is known as 'filler' or extra content to make up the rest of what was not covered in the Japanese version which was closer to the original manga itself. Last year, Cartoon Network screened the uncut original episodes on their channel which have the names listed under the Vegeta Saga etc. on Wikipedia.
Here's the way I describe it:

From 1989- 1996 in Japan on Fuji TV (or if they changed TV stations etc.) they screened all 291 episodes, plus the TV specials and movies. In America, from 1996-2003, they screened it in different timeslots, some episodes cut out, and the movies screened, as did the TV specials. On Cartoon Network now, they started screening the original first episodes (uncut) with different titles, etc. The DVD releases are the 277 episodes released/ to be released so far. They may release the other uncut later episodes soon. In Japan, they divided the series up into 4 sagas which screened as shown in the article (when), and the episodes were dived into sub-sagas in larger sagas in the USA. It may differ/ vary in other countries. That's the way I understand it. If you can correct me in anyway or explain something that I'm wrong about (most probably I am), can you please tell me so because I don't want to be wrong (although its sorta hard not to be). Thanks.

Dragon Ball Z Uncut airing

Those of you who are complaining about Cartoon Network canning the DBZ uncut episodes should know that Latin TV airs the episodes completely uncensored every morning (in Spanish, of course). Viewers in Los Angeles probably remember that these same Spanish episodes aired on KWHY channel 22 from 2001 to 2003. Also Latin TV airs uncensored Dragon Ball episodes and DR. Slump as well.

I know this obviously has already been discussed but can you guys update me on the picture situation. Almost all dbz articles have popular circulated pictures and their is no stated license. Sagas

The sagas section has innacurate list of what episodes belong to each saga. I double checked on many sources and I would like someone else to confirm. The major inacurity starts from Vegeta Saga since it has 10 extra episodes. I revert those articles, because DBZ has 291 episodes, not 276, that's the only and simple reason. Dragon Ball Z is a japanese show, not an american one, it should be 291 episodes and not 276, and both japanese and english titles should be keept. And also, Seasons 1 and 2 were already redubbed, there are new titles. User:Muchi

I have done some background check and 291 is the number of episodes apperently in Japan when 276 in the States. Since this is english wikipedia you can add the Japanese listings but do Not delete the english episodes lists since this is afterall the enlish wikipedia. You feel so strongly about the japanese lists then you can add it to coexist with the english one to provide a broader range of information. Tutmosis 03:12, 16 February 2006 (UTC)

Is there a DBZ Manga?

I recently removed references to a "Dragon Ball Z manga" on several DBZ-related pages and a user disgreed with me. I figured the best place to raise the question was here, since it is simpler than discussing it on every page I had edited. I am of the opinion that since DBZ is based entirely on Dragon Ball, there is no DBZ manga. I am aware that in translating DB into English, the later issues which correspond to DBZ have been re-titled DBZ (is this only in the US?). These facts are made clear in this article, which all DBZ-related articles link back to. Further complicating matters is that there are plenty of characters unique to DBZ (e.g. Vegeta), so to claim that he appears in the "Dragon Ball/Dragon Ball Z manga" is confusing at best (and misleading at worst) in my opinion. I think the best way to handle this is, when discussing the manga, to only refer to it as "Dragon Ball." --Do Not Talk About Feitclub (contributions) 11:25, 21 February 2006 (UTC)

I answered this question (in response to a revert of your edits) on Talk:Super_Saiyan, but I'll just cut-and-paste what I said here:
We're arguing over semantics and I don't think it's important. If you want to say "DBZ manga" then go right ahead, but it's not accurate. In Japan, there are two releases of the Dragon Ball manga: one in 42 volumes and one in 36 volumes. I own some of both, but not all. The 42-volume version has been released in the US split into two chunks. Volumes 1 through 16 were released by VIZ in the as "Dragon Ball" and the rest as "Dragon Ball Z". I presume these are the releases that you are talking about, but it was simply a marketing decision to release the books with the name most familiar to the readers. (If you check any of the volumes' cover art, you can still see the original number. For example, Goku wears a shirt with "17" on it on the first DBZ volume. And in the lower-right corner, there's a "DB 17 of 42" label.)
Now, you could *also* be talking about the movie tie-in mangas which were released in Japan and titled DBZ. These were not mangas in the traditional sense because they just consisted of animation captured from the movies with text bubbles. However, they aren't mangas in the strict sense of the word, but hey. We speak English and not Japanese and one word is as good as another.
The other important fact is that when the manga was originally produced in Shonen Jump, it was always called "Dragon Ball", up to the final chapter with Uub. I can scan the title page of that if you like.
BUT, this is the English Wikipedia and we're concerned with the English releases and it is a reasonable thing for a person to say that there was a "DBZ manga" because that is the only form they know of it. We should at least make sure that the Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z pages contain accurate information. JRP 13:18, 21 February 2006 (UTC)
In hindsight, I think I probably jumped the gun on all of this. Strictly speaking, manga in Japanese can refer to "comics" and "cartoons" which means there absolutely is a DBZ manga. Of course, when English speakers say "manga" they are refering to Japanese print comics which wouldn't include DBZ. Call it semantics, nitpicking or just accuracy but I feel like to "invent" a DBZ manga in this way diminishes the impact of the original DB which actually spawned all of this media (TV, movies, games, toys, etc). What if we use language like this:
  • (e.g.) "Vegeta or Prince Vegeta is a fictional character in the manga Dragon Ball and subsequent anime Dragon Ball Z and Dragon Ball GT."

About NPOV

Is it really neccesary for that large episode transcript to exist? It spoils the flow of the article. Also this article seems to be biased towards the original version, wheather it's better or not shouldn't really be a part of the Dragonball Z Wiki. It's just childish.

English Dubbing

I know Saban International dubbed the Vegeta and Namek Sagas, but FUNimation dubbed the rest. Did FUNimation really re-dub the Vegeta and Namek Sagas? And if so, are they available on DVD? Jienum

You likely have a fansub. They like to make the dialogue seem worse than it is. I think the REAL dialogue in this scene is "How dare you destroy my freakin' house?! I'm pissed off now! Don't come too close or you'll get yourself fried!" -- RattleMan 04:57, 23 April 2006 (UTC)

Split Video Games

Censorship removed?

DBZ has 276 episodes, not 291...I know because I torrented it all...also, all of the saga episode groupings are completely wrong for the funimation section, but I refuse to edit that much info...I fixed it anyway...

User:Buster Sword has nominated it for a good article. Although it's not a bad article, there are no references, etc. and has already been rated B-Class by the anime and manga WikiProject. The nom tag should be put up if anyone really wants to go through with this, I was going to review it and delist it (one ref for the Z not meaning anything doesn't seem like much), but if it wasn't filed properly somebody can just remove it themself from the nom list if you want. Are the English "Uncut" DVDs released for Frieza saga, Cell saga, ect, actually uncut? And BTW I'm talking about the ones that were released as standalone DVDs with only afew episodes each. And if it is censored, does FUNimation plan on redubbing all of the sagas to be uncencored?

I think it could be useful to add some DVD information (like the information we find on amazon) into each of the saga's pages since the pages already contain episodes lists. Creative changes

Hello all, I just read that according to whoever write this on this site: "Goku is booed in the English version but is cheered on in the Japanese version" Now, I watched both the English and Japanese versions of the episodes where Goku fights Cell and the dialogue is pretty much the same. If anything, the English version does have more people cheering on Goku than in the Japanese version.

(With the little girl and her mother after Goku used the Instant Transmission Kamehameha on Cell) Japanese Version: Little Girl: Will we not be seeing Mr. Satan anymore? (Or something like that) Her Mom: It appears so.

English Version: Little Girl: Let's go, Mom. Her Mom: (referring to Goku) I want to find out who this young man is.

(When Goku is shooting countless Ki blasts at Cell) Japanese Version: Little Girl: What's going on!?

English Version: Little Girl: Come on! Get him!

Is it true that all of dbz merchandise equals up to 3 billion dollars i got my source from attack of the show in the episode about anime os still good or something.

Clothing

Maybe it's a good idea to put some information on clothing somewhere. Various clothes have been weared throughout the serie's, such as Goku's suit, Vegeta's spandex suit with body armor, Piccolo's suit and many others. Someone should professionaly edit the article to state that in the FUNimation DUB from Season 2 - Last, Bruce Faulconer did the Music, and link to him!

  • Faulconer did not provide the music for Seasons 1 or 2. He provided the music from the Ginyu Saga all the way to Kid Buu. That was it.

Movie Names

Since this is the English Wikipedia, shouldn't the DBZ movies be listed under their English names? For example, "Return my Gohan!!!" should be listed as "Dead Zone". TJ Spyke 07:52, 25 August 2006 (UTC)

Cut out episodes

Apparently, in the English dub, 15 episodes were cut so that it has 276 instead of the full 291 episodes in the Japanese version. Can somebody call me where/what episodes they cut out, because there don't seem to be any gaps in the story that would indicate episodes being cut out. I think I would definently add for the fact that it took like what? 23-40 episodes for Namek to explode? (it may sound like an exaggeration, but it's probably not that far off) and the fact that the Cell Saga could have been condensed to 7 episodes (even 3). This series is one of the most drawn out things in the history of any TV show.
Yes it is very drawn out, but ask any fan and they wouldn't have a problem with it. It's length was one of the things that made DBZ such a good anime. I wouldn't have problem if you added some criticisms, but they would have to be credibly cited and not your own opinion. For example, find some sources first and write it properly, should be fine as long as you don't go and use weasel words or no cites, e.g. 'Some people say that the series was too drawn out' would not be a good way to put it. i heard a while back ...somewhere about a live action dbz movie...is this information false or is there truth to it?

A while ago there were rumors that Fox had picked up the rights to it, but the project never went anywhere. Anything you might have heard since then is completely unfounded speculation and based on rumors that fans have started over the years.--GeneralDuke 18:19, 21 September 2006 (UTC)

DBZ in popular culture?

Kinda moving on what the no criticisms header brought up, this article could really do with an examination of it's impact and reputation outside of it's fanbase. The whole OHMYGOD THIS POWER I'VE NEVER FELT ANYTHING LIKE THIS BEFORE LETS STAND HERE THE WHOLE EPISODE GRRRR cliche isn't mentioned at all, and it would be fair to say that DBZ is reckonised at least as much for it's goofiness than it is for it's action and plot, and alot more so than it is for it's 'themes of fatherhood'.

I think there should be mention of that AMV with Vegeta made out singing Whitney Houston's "I Will Always Love You". And also the one with Goku charging up knocks over some goats.

Innacuracy

There is a problem in this article as it mentions that the bilingual/uncut DBZ episodes have not been released to the public in North America. This is not true as of recent times. The DVDs are avaliable from Funimation and are bilingual and uncut discs. I don't know how this went unnoticed and I hope it gets fixed to show that the uncut/bilingual DVDs are avaliable. This will further legitamize the rest of Wikipedia by showing that the info is up to date and accurate. I hope this does change to the truth. If it isn't changed then I will change it myself.


Fandom?

It might be helpful to add a list and maybe an explination for some of the more common fandoms. Not just with DBZ, but with a suprising number of anime alot of people I talk to mistake alot of Fandoms for fact.
