I have also always wondered about that. I have never seen any other woman who covered her mouth like that, at least not in Northern Europe. I wish I could answer. I heard somewhere that it had to do with the fact that she was a widow, but I have never seen any other widow who covered her mouth. Perhaps it was simply a personal initiative, such as a wish to display extra modesty for religious reasons? I dont know, but it was surely unusual. --Aciram (talk) 15:22, 10 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Discussing it with some friends a while back, we speculated that maybe whoever painted it was engaging in some not-so-subtle political commentary/wishful thinking -- "If only someone would gag this woman so she'd stop speaking up in politics all the time!" --Zeborah (talk)
