Why isn't this part of the Distributed Filesystem Page?[edit]

Why is this information not part of the Distributed Filesystem page? Greg 03:35, 27 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Because this is specifically about Microsoft's DFS, while the Distributed file system article is about the general concept and not about any particular vendor's implementation. There are proper disambiguation links at the tops of both articles, so I don't think there is any problem with this arrangement. -- Bovineone 05:31, 27 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I think that the disclaimer in the article that states 'This article is about Microsoft's implementation of DFS. For general discussion of the concept and other implementations, see Distributed file system.' is misleading. In particular, calling it an "implementation of DFS" implies that there are other compatible implementations. From the article, it appears that there aren't. A wording closer to "implementation of a distributed file system" might make this more clear. -- John Reed Riley (talk) 04:02, 28 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I also found that disclaimer misleading. Microsoft doesn't have an implementation of DFS. AFAICT, they just hacked some stuff on top of SMB and called it Dfs, then renamed that to DFS. The real DFS is the one IBM has which is based off of AFS. --Aij (talk) 16:37, 22 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

DFS or Dfs[edit]

Which of those is the official Microsoft capitalization? I had the impression it was "Dfs", but a quick Google for "dfs site:microsoft.com" found both. Guy Harris 18:20, 24 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The proper abbreviation is uppercase, because it is an acronym. The google query also shows that "DFS" is the dominant usage, and that "Dfs" primarily only is used in older pages (Windows 2000 era), so those could be attributed to unintentional references in archived documents that are no longer being updated. -- Bovineone 19:02, 24 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I'm guessing they renamed it without telling anyone. I have little to back that guess. A friend had explained that Dfs refers to microsoft's thing, whereas DFS refers to the AFS derivative. My two most likely explanation for why people would call it DFS are that either MS renamed it, or other people acronymized it rather than using it's short name. This page has a bunch of links with both capitalizations. (Even at MS sites, eg here) Actually, I just found something even more telling. It appears IBM had DFS trademarked until at least 2005 [1] so MS probably switched names sometime after that. --Aij (talk) 16:51, 22 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
