Untitled[edit]

During Elvis's last Detroit concert at Olympia, a recording was made of Elvis singing Are You Lonesome Tonight and laughing through most of the song. Elvis had a habit of changing the original lyrics to a lot of his songs, this specific version the lyrics were written as "Do you gaze at the doorway and wish I was there" and Elvis sang "Do you gaze at your bald head and wish you had hair" when Elvis spotted a completely bald man in the audience.

I don't think this happened at Olympia. I have a recording with this song, but it's labeled "Elvis Presley / Las Vegas, August 1969". I've also found similar claims on the web:

taped at an 8/22/69 International show and included in a November '69 LP set. This one's a real collectors' item with Elvis totally breaking up.

1969 run at the International Hotel in Vegas

One of the most requested Elvis songs in the last 12 years has been the "live" laughing version of ARE YOU LONESOME TONIGHT, recorded at the International Hotel in Vegas on August 26, 1969.

Are You Lonesome Tonight (laughing version) and My Babe from Aug 26, 1969 MS.

As an aside, I also saw this on TV a long time ago. In my recollection, the bald guy was wearing a wig (toupe) that he at the crucial time lifted up and set down again. I have tried to find it as a video ever since, but without success.

See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Are_You_Lonesome_Tonight_(song) for what I consider the true history of the song.

Does anyone have a free image to use of the actual stadium? Surely we can do better than a pic of the zamboni? Dp76764 (talk) 20:33, 1 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, I'm an anonymous web surfer (from metro Detroit though!), and I was watching the NHL playoffs tonight and started surfing NYL Stanley Cup trivia on Wiki and ended up here: while the Olympia Zamboni is a great picture, obviously somebody, somewhere who is a Red Wings fan must have a picture of this great Red Wings venue of yore. Fer chrissakes Gordie Howe played at Olympia! A friend of mine has a framed picture of Olympia stadium hanging on the wall in his flat. I'll ask him to scan it and submit it here. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 74.12.65.85 (talk) 01:11, 21 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Rock and Roll history of Olympia Stadium[edit]

I have no idea where to look or who to speak to that with no the concerts that played at Olympia in the 70s. I personally thought I saw the Rolling Stones there but I’m not sure I know I saw them at Cobo Hall. I also thought I saw Stevie Wonder at Olympia again not sure… Can’t imagine why😉 If anyone could help me or put tell me what they remember going to, that would be great! Just taking a walk down memory lane and have very little memory to call upon. Hey, it happens🤷🏼‍♀️glo 2601:40C:4180:3190:D20:DDE5:5389:C917 (talk) 01:18, 12 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
