The shorter name Derry is used for the city served by this station and Londonderry for its county on the English language Wikipedia according to a compromise agreed in 2004 (please see Derry/Londonderry name dispute, and WP:LDERRY for more information on the naming issue).

On 27 November 2012, it was proposed that this article be moved to Derry railway station. The result of the discussion was not moved.

Translink's website[edit]

Translinks website now calls this station "Derry Waterside" throughout except on the fares tool. Might be an idea to move the page to match this - all the Irish stations match the timetable names, etc. --62.77.181.1 00:01, 20 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

That is incorrect - all timetables say "Londonderry". See http://translink.co.uk/resources2007/pdfs/derry_timetable_131209.pdf

The search system on their website uses whatever you provided to them - if you perform a search with the words "Londonderry" all results will say Londonderry. If you search for "Derry" then they will say Derry.

Derry/Londonderry display on trains[edit]

I have removed the citation needed tag as this is fact as per my edit summary. However, I've tried finding the clearest photo possible of a train displaying that sign... which is difficult cause the sign type seems to flicker in photos. I'm a bit confused. What is the actual name of the station? If it's officially known as "Londonderry Railway Station," the move seems inappropriate. It's capitalized thus in the lede. However, the title's capitalization suggests this is just the railway station in Londonderry. That seems inaccurate, as there's more than one, but if it's somehow right, we might as well move to match Derry. --BDD (talk) 21:20, 27 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
- Images such as this, this, and this would suggest that the station is named "Londonderry", and has been for some years. As regards the remainder of the name, a quick glance at Category:Railway stations served by NI Railways shows that "railway station" is not capitalised for NI station articles (which is in accord with Wikipedia:Naming conventions (UK stations): "x railway station" and "The official name of the station should normally be used with the appropriate suffix, except where this would be ambiguous. Derry~Londonderry[edit]

I have checked the Translink website. The station seems to be referred to as Derry~Londonderry, despite the signage. I'm of the opinion that the station's signage determines its ultimate name. Additionally, the paper and PDF timetables do call the line the "Derry~Londonderry Line", and I've updated the "Belfast-Derry railway line" page to reflect that, but the station itself is still referred to in there as "Londonderry."
Edinburgh Waverley station would be a similar UK example - Network Rail refers to it as just "Edinburgh" in most official documents, but both the station signage and the Wikipedia article both call it "Edinburgh Waverley". Either way, Translink are currently considering the possibility of building a new station in the Waterside area to replace the current one. It's likely that if they do, the station will get renamed. I'd say wait until the signs and/or the timetables are altered and Translink fully commits to any name change. In case the use of the current title is disputed, it has been pointed out in the last move discussion that according to Wikipedia:Naming conventions (UK stations) the name used on the platform signboards should be used if there is doubt over the station's official name. As stated in the previous contributions to this discussion, Translink names this station as Derry~Londonderry on its website which seems to eliminate any doubt over this station's official name. I have been involved in discussions over naming disputes before but this is only the first time I have contributed to a discussion over an issue related to Derry/Londonderry and I therefore do not intend to start a move discussion at present considering User:RooneyDonal21's unilateral move of this article from Londonderry Railway Station on 17 July 2023 has so far not been challenged and Wikipedia's railway related guidelines appear to be in favour. Banner removed[edit]

I have removed the new banner which warned editors not to question the name of this page and threatened to remove any such comments. As the only formal consensus is an ten-year-old one to name it "Londonderry railway station" and the page has recently been renamed without discussion, it seems inappropriate to deter editors from contributing to the debate. @Tk420: I have removed text from the reinstated page banner. Wikipedia:Naming conventions (UK stations) states that The official name of the station should normally be used and I think the official name could easily be questioned. For example, the Translink website does not have a page for the station; its journey planner accepts Derry or Londonderry or Derry Londonderry, repeating whatever name the visitor enters. I do not intend to raise an RM for this page, but it would be wrong to mislead or intimidate anyone wishing to challenge your recent unilateral page move. Please excuse the lateness of my reply. My use of a banner on this article's talk page is based on the one on Talk:Derry although that is based on an agreed compromise. I would have preferred a move discussion here, which is recommended if a proposed move is potentially controversial, before the move from Londonderry Railway Station but I feel that the current title of this article is in line with the guideline set in Wikipedia:Naming conventions (UK stations) which state to use the name on the station signboards if there is doubt over the station's official name. I presume this refers to the signboards on the platforms which read "Derry~Londonderry" although the sign at the entrance reads "North West Transport Hub" which creates potential for doubt over the official name. I would also like to point out that the last move discussion was before the station was moved back to the pre-1980 site in 2019 (the signboards at the 1980-2019 station bore solely the name "Londonderry").
