notability[edit]

Based on what is currently in the article, I do not see any need for the article; the topic seems non-notable, there is nothing besides trivial mention apparent. It could be okay to mention this station as one of many in an article about the Lehigh Valley Railroad, or a split-out list-article of its stations. There are three sources cited, but not for any substantial information about this station.

The notability tag reads: "The topic of this article may not meet Wikipedia's general notability guideline. Please help to establish notability by citing reliable secondary sources that are independent of the topic and provide significant coverage of it beyond its mere trivial mention. If notability cannot be established, the article is likely to be merged, redirected, or deleted."

I believe it would normally be justified to use SPEEDY or PROD process to call for deletion of this, but in deference to the editor creating this article recently, I won't use those now. Editor Mackensen, could you please provide more detail and otherwise develop this with sources, or explain why it should not be deleted? --Doncram (talk) 22:30, 9 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

  • In general, current and former railroad stations are presumed notable. There's plenty to say about Depew as it was the principal interchange point on the Lehigh Valley for passengers continuing into Canada. Editors with access to Buffalo-area newspapers will find plenty of coverage. Mackensen (talk) 02:04, 10 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • Research into Depew is hampered by the poor availability online of Buffalo-area newspapers; see e.g. [1]. We don't hold that against articles, of course. Mackensen (talk) 02:41, 10 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I was criticized at wp:ANI for the fact that, above, I "challenged the notability of an article [Mackensen had] created (Depew station (Lehigh Valley Railroad)), and left a strangely-worded message on the talk page. I left several comments; he never responded." Okay, I thought my comment was polite, questioning the notability of the topic, while not opening a speedy or PROD deletion process. User:Mackensen, I appreciate that you responded, and I think I noticed but chose not to respond further at the time basically to be nice. Despite being challenged, the article has not been developed with any substantial information about the topic. The article has a nice fake-aerial-type illustration of the town, but the illustration does not depict the station. Your comments above do not support notability. There is no inherent notability of railway stations. You assert that "there's plenty to say" but have not found anything to say, apparently.
I empathize somewhat about your not having any sources with substantial coverage. I have myself often supported "Keeping" articles at AFD, when I asserted that sources must exist, based on my general knowledge about existence of coverage about museums or whatever. But usually that does not work and such articles get deleted. At this point, I think the article should be deleted, I suppose by AFD process as deletion would be contested and should be considered by a wide set of editors. However, I don't understand if your link to a Buffalo newspaper custom search engine is meant to assert there really does exist any coverage of this as a station. Could you comment further, please? Otherwise I think an AFD should be opened. Also, however, I may first try inviting an editor or two who have good access/experience with historic newspapers to do what they can to find coverage. --Doncram (talk) 07:45, 6 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
