Annex[edit]

"On July 9, 2007 the Lakewood City Council voted to annex, zone and vest the Denver Federal Center. Lakewood City Manager signed an offer to purchase Denver Federal Center for $25 million." What are the consequences of this action? Will the Federal Center remain or will it be demolished?

Actually, because of the contaminants leaving the Federal Center, mainly due to the past abuses from when it was an ordance plant (solvents, oils, etc.), the City of Lakewood would sue the Feds every chance they could. The Denver Federal Center is in the middle of a highly desirable piece of land that Lakewood wanted for the tax base, so finally GSA and Lakewood agreed that Lakewood could get part of the Federal Center in exchange for no more lawsuits. So what was once an urban wildlife refuge is now getting developed. The bulk of the federal center will remain government offices, but the City of Lakewood will have far more control over what gets gets built where, along with assuming most of the infrastructure maintenance. They've already built a new St. Anthony's Hospital on part of the Federal center and are close to finishing a major light rail stop there as well. wbfergus Talk 15:13, 26 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
